  • Recently I have been fit enough and inclined to go out and do some rides just for the hell of it. A new bike has increased my desire to get riding, though this has been facilitated by a recent epidural steroid injection in my spine to help relieve sciatica.

I have been really enjoying riding but part of me feels like I am just pootling along and that I could be pushing myself harder. The problem is that I don't want to race - doing another sport competitively ruined it for me. I feel like I need a challenge or goal that is motivating me to try harder (getting strava PBs is not really of interest).

What motivates you to ride? If you are not competing, what gives you the incentive to try harder?

  • I'm the least competitive person ever. Except on a bike. I have a few work buddies who ride. Its good because we are all of a very similar speed and ability. I'm one of the faster ones maybe. I think its the motivation to be faster than them that keeps me going. To beat them up the climbs/ sprints, etc. Plus when I commute on my own I put intervals in to push myself.

Could you get a fresh circle of people to ride with maybe? Either through work or friends or join a fresh club?
