Coast and Castles

  • Anybody done this route? I find myself with a weeks holiday needing using up be end of September and was thinking of doing the coast to coast but this works out a bit easier for travels.

  • Kinda surprised that no-one has replied to this. I quite fancy the idea of doing this route sometime. Not any time soon mind you, I've just got back from doing the Hadrians cycleroute on Saturday. It was awesome btw and I'd thoroughly recommend it.

  • Hi, did this in 2011 over three days

I did it as a late add on, so had no input to the planning. It was supported so we didn't have to carry luggage. I would have had breaks in different place , naily at the Castle (which seems the point. We did a lot of waiting for folk.

The ride it self is not demanding, only one hill of substance out of Alnwick and only short. Glorious long climb on b7007 and long descent afterwards.

With all due deferance to our friends in the North East, the last 15mls is a bit grim and we finished at Tynemouth and saved the ride in to Newcastle.

  • What kind of bike/tyres did you ride on?

  • What kind of bike/tyres did you ride on?

Old mountain bike with 700c and drops. 35mm Schwalbe Marathons. You could do it on anything except a pure road bike really. Couple of lads did it on CX bikes, some MTB and one a hybrid.

  • I'm doing it on my CdF so should be fine. My mate however is riding on an old steel road frame with max 25c tyres.

  • CdF sounds the ideal tool for this sort of ride. I used my Pompino with 28s for the Hadrian's cycle route but my brother used his Giant Defy 2 with 25s. Both bikes were fine, even on the gravelly bits.

  • Looks awesome. Dunstanburgh Castle is one of my favourite places.

  • It is very pretty. I don't think I've seen it up close before.
