  • We all buy things that we don't really need (although clothes are something we do sort of need, we don't need such nice and pricey ones) but I do find the seemingly increasing fetishisation of cycling gear very unattractive.

Generally I'm sick of other cyclists buying things then posting them up on the internet like they should be rewarded for spending money when they haven't done a single meaningful thing with them yet. What am I meant to say, "Well done! You did capitalism! Have a badge!" And I don't mean a bargain secondhand frame or something really special, which would be different, just off the shelf things which are all identical and cost the regular amount.

But sale time is even worse: "Should I buy this thing I have no real need for and is essentially not really that suitable for me because it has money off? I'm so desperate to spend money!". Every Rapha sale people seem to rush to buy things they didn't even want before just because they have some money off. It's not saving if you weren't going to buy it anyway. I just find it all a bit tawdry.

Hobbies are fun, riding your bike is fun. Skip the sale and go for a ride instead.
