I picked up a couple of stepped ferrules. I don't actually think they're the correct size (probably too small a step) , but the way they are shapped I can make them big enough to sit tight. The guy in the shop also pointed out I could just use the cable with no ferrule on the end. That is probably what I'll end up doing.
Aye, that's understandable, I'd want to do the same and cold-setting to 135mm shouldn't be difficult when you come to do it.
With that in mind I'd probably go through it in this order:
Double check the hanger.
Get a stepped ferrule, without it sitting securely you'll always have subpar shifting.
Check the limit screws.
