  • Exactly! As soon as big manufacturers start making frames designed for wireless shifting, we're gunna see some #marginal #gains. I think that'll only happen when Shimano or Campag go wireless tbh, but it's an interesting thought for now.

  • And then there'll be even more pressure to the UCI about the outdated max frame weight of 6.8kg

Even in the Vuelta the mechanics are trying to add more weight on the pro bikes.

  • Consumer demand is outstripping pro kit, for the first time in ages. They'll wise up soon enough, like with discs.

  • For 4-6 months and then the first recall will commence.

  • No simultaneous front and rear shifting

That would've seriously fucked me on PBP, running a racing double and doing the 'front ring down, cassette double tap up' to keep it schweet...

  • 1000km distance between charges

    So, not even a week...

  • Di2 cables were already hidden. So the difference will be mostly in the levers and derailler profiles. Di2 are pretty large but then so are these. Best to just ride fixed.

  • Quick poll - how many people on here have geared bikes that are sub 6.8kg?

  • 9.2kg of hefty steel.

  • 8kg of not so hefty steel..

  • I think TW has a sub-6.8, as I suspect may many CAAD10 owners, my lightest geared, Di2 bike is 7.5ish of steel.

I'm normally in the "innovator/early adopter" part of the spectrum (just been reading about this, it's quite interesting), but eTap isn't ringing my bell - I think it's interesting, and I'd love to build an eTap specific bike, but I can't see anything to make me move from Di2 (at the moment, I'll add).

  • I'd like Di2 but my road frame is 6 years old, has external cable routing and I don't want to drill it.

For me, SRAM gives me the benefits of electronic shifting on a frame that wasn't specifically designed for it.

I could, of course, change the frame, but I love riding it so don't want to.

  • I like it. If I'd known I'd be priced this way. I may have gone with the super6, and waited.

    Those pilot shifters look great.

I bet loads of people that store their bike in the garage or whatever. Will find removable batteries for charging a nice easy solution.

  • Mine's exactly 6.8kg and could easily go under that.

  • For those of us stuck with vintage Di2

Blk-tec have finally made their M1 stem available.

    Full carbon.
    120mm only.
Room for 3 or 5 port junction box.

They also have an integrated bar stem on thecwheel which will hide the junction box.

  • Mines 7.1kg.

That's with 70g saddle, ti pedal spindles, full carbon frameset, ti skewers, carbon tubular wheels....etc.

    I blame the bottle cages.

  • how much? any links?

  • Mine's 6.9 including garmin mounts, sensors and cages, and the only truly weenie part I've got on it is Ti speedplay skewers. I think I could get it to 6 without a vast amount of difficulty / with a lot of money.

re: aeros, but think of the dumb junction box and ancillary wires all over the place.

re: charge / distance; admittedly you're on the far end of the Bell Curve of rider distances, but if you're putting that kind of mileage in you're also probably charging your lights / garmin frequently too... I don't think it's a limiting factor for the majority of people. It will also get better as batteries inevitably improve.

I can see a lot of people in that situation.

  • Right, enough of this flash $$$$$ stuff. Lets go to the other end of the market. What's my options in running a 10 speed di2 system? Will it be that I can have 6770 or 6870 leavers but need 6770 rear mech? Would I also need a 6770 front mech? What about satellite shifters?

They should just release 105 di2 for less than the price of the etap rear mech.

  • re: aeros, but think of the dumb junction box and ancillary wires all over the place.

Look at the size of that thing!!! - your not gonna hide that in a stem on your TT bike...

  • To divert form my own question; I wonder if they will do different battery options. Larger capacity one for the rear to extend life, smaller ones for deranged weight weenies.

  • true, that's a bulky bastard! I'm sure some enterprising young sort will find a way to hide it in the fork tho. Plus, 1st gen ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • I guess pinching your mates battery at the cafe stop would become a thing.

  • Apparently if you run out of both batteries, you can "manually" set the chain to the gear you want and it will hold it there.
