added some comfy grips on my commuter... next step is probably some mudguards and maybe brakes. really want to make this frame work as the do-everything city bike...rides so well

Too tight, especially with a tyre with a tread pattern like that. All it would take is for a piece of gravel to be picked up by the tyre tread, and your front wheel could lock up through lack of clearance....

I tried putting my grips like this it was horrid, way better the opposite way.

Very small chance of it locking up unless you're cycling on gravel paths. Even then most of the gunk will probably just come flying off. Can't see it locking up. A stone wouldnt be big enough to get in there anyway.

Personal preference innit...I used these for polo too and I found not having my wrist bent was more comfortable

Hmm:
Intention might put in rat, but actually going through with the idea probably sets it back into anti.

Facing forwards? Or upside down?

although going to the effort of zip tying in does seem like more effort than just replacing the bolt.

As opposed to said piece of gravel being annihilated by the force of being squeezed into a tiny space?

It can happen with wet grass, true story.

Yeh I believe that. But how often do you blast your bike across wet grass?
-

I did it once, I fell off.

I've ridden this on gravel paths, not caught any stones but you do get lots of muck build up especially when it's muddy !

This is not a good opinion. You are wrong. Many people here have ridden silly clearances and could explain why.
