Or Tornado or whatver they have over there.

I just need to find out which one is best for racing with.
-
• #29
West- East it is then,(starts looking for cheapo airline tickets).

Whatever you decide go 36 hole for added strength. Bikes will end up heavy being fully laden.
-
• #31
Are you calling me fat?
I've almost never used 36h wheels. Is there some added load with dyno wheels? It's not they're like disc wheels when rotational forces at the spokes matter.
cough Specialized how about you guys chuck me a new bike cough I've bought enough of them and flashed them around enough for you..

Tornados at that time of year. Right across the prairies. hippy, Dorothy and Toto.
On the West Coast, they have Sharknados.

I have enough base fitness

Luckily, I still have my Australian passport which means I can legally punch sharks.

"bass fitness"

Not at all, probably nearly as svelte as me. But with all the associated weight, sleeping bag/ bivi bag/ compact stove and other essential shite, then its a false economy to save a few grams on spokes.
-
• #37
Stove? umadbro? I'm going to be doing this Jesse Carlsson style, carrying as little as possible.
I think he slept in some kind of jacket only, maybe with a bivvy bag? -

Some stuff about what Mike and Ed took 1st time, mainly bike-tech focused but a bit about sleeping/electronics too http://roadcyclinguk.com/gear/trans-am-bikes-mike-hall-ed-pickups-pivot-vault-bikes.html

The SOL emergency bivvys are super cheap and pack tiny/light but not breathable... some of the lightweight pertex bags are only 70-80g heavier but a lot more breathable.
Electronics wise - got two SP dyno hubs (rebranded as Exposure) and they've been flawless, heard nothing but good things about SON too. Exposure Revo is a great light for the size/weight, plug in taillight is good too. Handy to be able to unplug light and remove it from the bike, the standlight doubles up as a torch pretty well when you do stop rather than using juice from a helmet mounted light if you use one...

Ta, I've got a lot of reading to do.
-
• #45
Hmm those emergency bivvy bags are really designed for one use only and wont stand much abuse plius they will leave you soaking wet by morning from condensation. Whereas the pertex bags whilst breathable aren't waterproof. I'm thinking goretex bivvy for durability.
-
• #46
Weight of the three different options? Most people seem to be making do with the single use ones.
-
• #47
200g, 300g and 1 kilo? Thinking about it if some sort of shelter is found then complete waterproof resistance is not required. Pertex wins.

"First of all, a better sleeping bag, or bivvy or something. That LaFuma bag was awful. It was wet, it was drafty, and it was overall just shit. This low end bag held me back the most, because when I would lay down for 5 hours, I wouldn’t get 5 solid hours of sleep, I’d get 5 hours of restless sleep and that would require me to sleep longer the next night and made me ride worse. This is certainly something that I would need to remedy.
An attempt at fixing the cold problem, a $40, 5.5 oz SOL Escape Lite bivvy. It will replace my bag for East Coast summer touring and pad my bag in the West. (Crap phone pic 1)" -

Ok- nipped over to Cotswold Camping/ Northface at lunch they have heavier ones- probably gross weight with packaging. Good point that West will be colder, altitude in Colarado particularly even in June. Going Wesr - East means warm clothing/ bag can be jettisoned or sent home as soon as its no longer needed.
Until you hit the inevitable cyclone...
