Academic you say? Well then. The answer is surely yes. What to do about it? Nietzsche on why not to address the bigger picture:
He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you.
On the other hand (and my favourite Nietzsche quote):
The thought of suicide is a great consolation: by means of it one gets through many a dark night.
But in either case there's no escape.
