• I really must get round to joining the vcc! Any chance you're able to pass me on the contact details for the rims via pm?

  • PM sent

  • Cheers guys!
Look to have the inside track on a nice set of Conloy Asp from Big Block's contact at the VCC. Now to join!!!!!

  • I actually need to look at that more closely :/

  • Thanks to Bigblock, I collect a set of Conloy Asp rims laced to Gnutti hubs next Wednesday. Also have a Brooks B32 on the way from Hilary Stone. #progress

  • What is left to acquire?

  • BB and 2x chains are the remaining things I need to actually get it going. I'll be looking to swap out the stem and headset when more period correct items come along. Anyone got any leads on a nice BB? Missed out on a lovely Chater Lea one on ebay last night by £1.00. Meh

  • More rusty goodness arrived at my place of employment today.
This just prewar Brooks B32 Narrow saddle.
Hillary Stone had it advertised as a B32 but the photos weren't that great (perspective wise) and I couldn't get a sense of how wide it was but the price was right (probably because of the extra holes in the side - anyone wnow what they'd be for?)! I ordered it then googled B32 then saw that normal B32's appear to be quite fat. The history of Brooks site told me that there was also a narrow version. Eeeeek I thought so panicked up until the time that it arrived and was pleasantly surprised that it was the narrow version as you can probably just make out in one of the photos inscribed on the side.
If you like your vintage bikes all NOS, look away now. Perfect amount of Patina IMHO.

  • The holes in the sides may have been for lacing the saddle, to help it keep its shape and stop it spreading over time. Been keeping an eye on this project, some very nice parts coming together, just about to start gathering some steel bits for my mancunian '48 project

Ah that's great! Did not know this. Hope we'll see a build thread for your build.

  • As Ice Cube said "Today was a good day!"
I went out to East Finchley to meet a lovely man called Steve (with a cavernous and incredibly well stocked with bike parts garage) who @BigBlock put me in touch with for some 26 x 1 1/4" Constrictor Conloy Asp rims. The rear came laced to a Gnutti hub and the front laced to a FB (Frateli Brivio) hub. Both small flange with chrome barrels and alloy flanges. The best thing is they're laced up with 15/17 gauge spokes saving me the hassle of having them built up! Bonus! and I can also screw the cyclo block straight on.
He obviously liked the cut of my jib and asked if there was anything else I needed. I noticed he had a Bluemels Spearpoint extension on one of his bikes so asked if he had another. Out one came!
Next, I asked if he had any Chater Lea cups and out a good set came.
At this stage, I stopped asking as I knew I was running out of money. Anyway, just a few small bits to go and the build can commence! Here are some pics of todays haul:

  • that worked out very well.

    and cable outers?

  • Thanks
Was hoping for a set of cotton cased ones like @ElGato has on his Bates.
    @ElGato, where'd you find yours?

  • This is coming out better than mine :)

  • that worked out very well.

    and cable outers?

And where may I ask are these from?!?

  • This is coming out better than mine :)

No way, yours is far nicer to start with!

  • the outer cables are from Italy
    about 9 euros a metre
Sheaths brakes thousand lines 9 colors - Celeste Bianchi - Yellow Legnano -Green Lygie - Black - White - Red - Blù - Brown - Grey

  • Were they using these types back then in the 40s-50s?

  • I would prefer a ribbed type like this on a barn find
but coloured cables were around. the 1949 Holdsworth Aids for Happy Cycling listed silver, red, blue or green.

  • This is looking good! Nice stuff.
Found the cables in a local bike shop.
Unfortunately they only had 3 (2 in black and a silver that I've fitted to my Baines fixed).
    Ribbed ones would look fine.

  • Ribbed ones would look fine.

Cool, I've just sent off an email to order 2m of 50's ribbed stuff from the @Skülly recommended Universal Cycle Centre.

  • See? now I must do it for mine too!

  • Hi,

With the kind permission of @7VEN, I thought I would pop my newest project up. I was lucky enough to find this 1947 Hobbs 'Superbe' in my size recently. It has the original paint job and decals. Came with a Lytaloy headset and Bayliss Wiley BB, which I serviced and they are in pretty good shape.

It's going to be quite a slow build as sadly I am neither time nor cash rich, but I am keen to find the period correct parts and do a sympathetic build in keeping with the current condition of the frameset.

All I have purchased so far is the GB girder stem seen in the picture that was a total fleabay bargain. So...................... many pretty things to amass.
