  • If you think I'm being abusive now you should have seen some of my earlier work. You probably don't know it, but it was good-at the moment I'm really just being sardonic so really you should be thankful.

Selling people things, then ignoring them if they're not happy, or conversely, being unhelpful and then demanding they cancel Paypal disputes when they haven't received the item and are pretty stressed and pissed off, does not for a good trader make.

As for 'accusations based on nothing' I'm not doing any such thing; the people you've sold things to are-I'm just making a small aside about the similarities in user handle reflecting badly on me.

Apart from that, stop being such a fucking bedwetter, sort your shit out and nobody will be mentioning you in this thread any more.

  • yiss. classic new page post.

  • The package that I received from @Gruby was packed to a very high standard and I was pleasantly surprised by the condition of the frame. However perhaps more communication between courier-Gruby-Myself was needed for it to be a completely smooth transaction.

    Repped

You should read what he's been saying about poor old Betancur, no one deserves that

  • I stand by my every word on the subject.

    Betancur likes pies.

It's a natural law, just as Horner hates hair follicles and Paolini huffs gear.

  • Next time I am selling something and you are after it I will only offer discount IF you update the blog.

  • mate... this Masters malarkey. I hoped Ocelot would be free in time for the Vuelta but alas he is going to be scrutinising matters of materiality, constructivism and authenticity in aneurism-inducing detail for a course he hates and has since established is worth sweet fuck all in the job market.

Which is why n+1 just happened as eh... motivations. I don't think I'll be buying anything else for a while : /

  • ...sent the same way it arrived from the shop.

If you received a bent bar from the shop, do you think they're not responsible?

  • I'm not going to make a detailed reply, as I'm about to go to bed. But just to clarify, the bars were what I first inspected to be in good condition. I was working at the time so took them out for a quick inspection then messaged to say that I had received the item as a bit of communication to you. I then went back to work, soon after when I had time I took them out the box and could visually tell that something wasn't right. One side looked off to me.

I thought it must be an illusion of the eye, but was busy and went back to work again. I looked again when I had more time as I was still unconvinced of the quality. So this time I took a width measurement and found them to be 5mm wider. I then placed them on a table and against a flat edge and could also see an alignment issue there too.

Anyway, the packaging appeared fine to me. It's the bars that are the problem. The way that they were packaged would not allow them to be bend outwards, as the box had no room to give on either side. I don't see how it's possible to bend bars outwards, from inside to out when you have a box surrounding them. And you would have to force the bars apart with great force, well past 5mm to get them to mis-shape like that, with leverage from the inside. I also don't see how it would be possible to bend the bars by applying pressure from the top down, squeezing the sides out from underneath. Again you would need a massive force.

Regardless the guys are right and I already said it to @Gruby, it's not my problem that the bars are bent when sold in good condition. It also sounds a little weird how he didn't want to do a payment transfer and said I would need to pay the fees. I stupidly agreed to do a private transfer, thinking that his time on this forum and his activity would warrant a decent person. I didn't see any bad comments on here for this sort of thing. I'll know for next time not to fall for this and take my time on these things.

I'll post some pictures early next week as I'm away tomorrow.

  • I don't see how you can make a bar wider when boxed up like this.

  • They could have been bent in the centre, causing the curved section to splay?

  • Bought a bike here a couple of days ago and rode it home, only to find the chainline was out. It looked like the bb had moved (odd) so I took off the cranks and had a look. Sure enough it was loose, but really loose so both sides of the sealed cartridge moved freely but in concert (odder). I removed it, and it turns out the shell is totally stripped.
I contacted the seller to ask if they knew about this to which the reply was that their uncle (a professional bike builder) had serviced it, so was ignorant to the state of the threads.
I'm not sure where I stand on this, on the one hand it was a good deal but on the other I understand that thread less bb units need constant retightning. I guess I'm disappointed that I don't have a completely sound frame.

    Thoughts?

  • You were not told that the frame was sound and were provided with one that was not? Sounds like grounds for money back/full return.

  • I think so too, or at least a part refund for a replacement frame.
I'll email the seller again, as I basically got 'oh soz' when I asked about it. Pain is that they've left London now so returning the bike is awkward.

  • Do you have his address? Put something in writing setting out your issue and its value and send it by post and email. Write that you expect a response within 14 days and if he doesn't you could consider the small claims court.

There are risks involved though, namely: (1) you lose; or (2) he has no money to pay you if you win.

Maybe go see your local free legal advice centre?

  • This is beside the point, but I've been pleasantly surprised by the threadless BBs I've been using on my Pomp.

They only lasted about 2500 miles during the winter, but they haven't needed the constant retightning I feared after reading the internet reviews. Perhaps once in the life of the bb after fitting.

  • I'm not getting a similar experience. I tightened it right up and after 15miles it started creaking and reporting through the cranks. I think it's because there's play in the shell where the threads just don't exist anymore.
As an aside, anyone know where and how much I can get a bb rethreaded? That could be an option.

  • Not if there is no material left to thread

  • I tightened it right up and after 15miles it started creaking and reporting through the cranks

    Tightened what up?

    I'm confoosed.

Does it already have a threadless BB or is the current BB a threaded one that's working loose because there aren't enough threads left in the frame?

If it already has a threadless one, it perhaps ought to have been down to you to spot that...

Either way I'm with @HousecatHST (whose name I always read as holocaust for some reason) threadless BBs can work just fine. If you love the frame and returning it is a pain get one fitted and see how you get on.

  • Yeah it already had one fitted, which was loose by the time I got home, but also loose inside the shell itself, so that there was play in the crank arms. Tightening it up also involved alignment, which shouldn't be an issue really. To clarify, the bb is tight against the sides of the bb shell, but there is room inside for it to move around.

Tbh if I can get the bike running in a reliable way then that'll suit me just fine, when it's not rattling and creaking I'm loving every moment or riding it.

  • Then I reckon you should go to your LBS and get a sexy new threadless BB fitted.

  • Would LoL if it was bb30

  • The Carlton?

It was advertised as "Rides perfectly, nice and quiet. Only bad thing is the light scratches on the decals, slight rub to the top tube paintwork and a few scratches on the rims..."

Apart from which the guy is a cunt.

And a stupid one at that.

Here's the thread he started, enquiring about bottom brackets for "...my Carlton track bike... ...destroying the threads."

He deliberately mis-represented the condition of the bike and lied about being unaware of the damage. Does he even have an Uncle?

Get a quote for having the BB shell replaced and offer him the choice of either paying for that, or taking the bike back.

  • wac! if so.
