• I've heard running a compact 10speed with appropriate front mech and 8speed in the back can make it easy for chain to rub on the front mech due to wider chain and narrower front mech cage.

    That can happen, but it just means you need to make trim adjustments with the front lever like we did in the olden days. There used to be a skill in moving both downtube levers with one hand to shift multiple cogs and still keep the front quiet :-)
