  • @Gaston_Fr @WimVDD thanks! It's taken a while to get the parts but getting there slowly... I'll update when I get the wheels set up etc...

  • was messing around in work with some wheelset, just checked how will it look like

  • Hello!
I am currently in the process of finishing up a classic steel frame with STI's and I'm searching for some polished silver compact drop bars with cable grooves in 25.4 or 26. Current contender are some HW1's, but I have a feeling that there are even better choices. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Something like the picture below would be perfect.

  • Get the HWYs

  • I'd also says get the HWY One.

  • This looks great man

  • Had my first meeting and written build list for my custom Hartley Cycles audax/paved bikepacking tourer. Frame should be being started in January or February. Will start a thread for it when it's more underway. 8speed, triple, bar end shifters, with disc brakes and restrap #carryeverything kit. Old meets new. Wanted to share my excitement.

  • Oh, but opinions, plan is clearance for 28c with guards, and 35c CX tyres without guards for if I want to do more gravel/bridleway rides. Seem sensible? I mostly ride and enjoy riding roads rather than gravel and stuff, but want options. Hence why I'm also getting sliding dropouts so that I can run it fixed/hub gear if wanted.

  • Hartley Cycles look pretty awesome.

Have a butcher at compact chainset, like 46/30 but without the cross chaining issues.

  • Been considering a compact. Running a triple on my current set up and do like it, but could be swayed. Been mostly looking at shimano chainsets, was going to go with a 9 speed XT chainset, but shimano don't seem to do any compact equivalents. Unless I get the 10speed XT compact and put my own 8/9 speed rings on it, but have heard of troubles with cross chaining. Any recommendations?

  • Go 10 speed, enjoy the wide 11-34t cassette with the 9 speed MTB deraileur combine with the 50/34 chainset (or 46/34).

This way will also reduced the q-factor so you won't feel duck footed with those MTB chainset, and thus enjoy road riding while being able to go bridleway bashing.

Recommend at least 32mm with mudguard, 40mm without, best to have a little more room than not enough.

This way you have a road gearing (bottom to middle of cogs), with the last 3 big cog perfect for touring (34/34 will get you up a mountain on a loaded tourer).

You can even put a 11-36 cassette and still have the same gearing as an 8 speed 11-28 cassette with the extra 32t and 36t for the hard stuff.

  • Nice and nice

  • Unless I get the 10speed XT compact and put my own 8/9 speed rings on it.

BTW don't need to do that, they'll work regardless of what chain you're using.

The internal spacing of the chain remain almost unchanged, it's just the external width that have gotten narrower, which mean a 10 speed chain can just about work well on an 8 speed set up, I even managed to put a (admittedly worn) 11 speed chain on an 6 speed beater as it's the only free chain lying around.

  • 10 speed chain can just about work well on an 8 speed set up

Sometimes, but not guaranteed. The internal width was 3/32" up to 8-speed, and 11/128" from 9-speed up. In some cases, 8-speed chainrings and sprockets are too wide for 9/10/11-speed chain.

  • I imagine running the wider chain would be fine though? So I could run 8speed cassette with 9 speed XT mech, and for example an ultegra compact, with an 8spd chain and it would work fine? Front mech is friction, rear is indexed or friction, but mostly run it indexed on current set up.
Could always go 10speed all round and just set bar ends to friction, but I'm a bit scared of thin, expensive chains.

  • I could run 8speed cassette with 9 speed XT mech, and for example an ultegra compact, with an 8spd chain and it would work fine?

Very unlikely to cause trouble. In theory, a wide chain can be unhappy going through a narrow RD pulley cage but you'd probably have to be running 7-speed chain in an 11-speed RD for it actually to happen.

  • Okay cheers. I mean I'm running an 8spd chain through a 9spd rear mech at the moment and it's fine so it's more about the 10 speed up front that I was worried about, I've heard running a compact 10speed with appropriate front mech and 8speed in the back can make it easy for chain to rub on the front mech due to wider chain and narrower front mech cage.
I don't like the bigger jumps between sprockets on the 11-34 8spd cassette, but could always have a touring cassette and a normal cassette.

That can happen, but it just means you need to make trim adjustments with the front lever like we did in the olden days. There used to be a skill in moving both downtube levers with one hand to shift multiple cogs and still keep the front quiet :-)
