  • I'm currently having a bit of a conundrum regarding the locking situation at the new flat I'm about to move into. Sadly bringing the bike up in the flat isn't an option due to a lack of space in my bedroom, and a flatmate who sadly isn't as keen on bikes as I am.

There is a secure bike store where residents can lock their bike. This can only be accessed with a key, and if you're already inside the building, however I'm obviously still going to lock the bike.

The stands to lock to in the bike storage are sadly those terrible ones where the metal of the stand is only in the proximity of the front wheel. I've added some pictures of the area below. The flatmate says there have been no thefts of cycles at all in the 2 years he's been there, however I am conscious that my bikes look like they will be the most expensive in there by some margin.

My first thoughts were to get 2 big chain/padlock combos so that I can lock the frame and front wheel to the stand. However, I currently own 2 mini and 1 large U lock, and so I was thinking that if I bought one more large U lock, I could lock downtube to front wheel and then front wheel to stand. I know that you could saw through the wheel if you really want, however I'm thinking that it's likely to put someone off - at that point they're going to go for one of the other bikes secured only by a U lock through the quick-release front wheel.

Thoughts on this? Any better suggestions that aren't going to cost the world?
