If you don't fancy your Dremel skillz, use the stock 39T inner with this cheap bash guard (if they ship internationally), much cheaper than getting the Alfine guard as a spare part.

The FC-S500 (Alfine) is basically an FC-4600 (Tiagra) crankset with a chainguard instead of an outer ring, so if you want shorter cranks just get 165mm 4600s and grind the teeth off the outer ring :-)
