It's a key ingredient in fertiliser, people the world over are not going to stop making, transporting and using it.

Indeed, but it's not too much to ask for them to handle it in a safe way, which is totally possible. It's mainly about not storing it near combustible substances, not difficult. Nearly all of these disasters have been totally avoidable.

Been reading up the wiki you've posted, fucking hell.

The vivid description made it sound very much like a nuclear explosion without the radioactivity.
