  • Number of transistors per square inch doubles every year.

They pack more stuff onto the same sized chip (more cores, more L1/L2/L3 cache, more dedicated processing modules for graphics, crypto, FP maths, etc) and so things get done quicker than before, even with the same (or lower) clock speeds.

  • Also, pipeline all the things.

  • Where you looking as I'm in the market for a new Win7 laptop. My trusty Lenovo T410 is just about ready to die.

  • On Windows 10: Edge is much better than IE, but not quite ready for prime time (although I think this is true of Chrome as well, until the fix the "Waiting for Cache" lock-up bug).

  • It boots soooooo much faster than 7. Dunno if its somehow enabled AHCI mode on my macbook although I thought that was locked in firmware.

  • Just a usual upgrade type question. I've been gifted an old Samsung X420 which is handy as I needed a laptop.

    Specs:

    Intel CPU U7300 @ 1.30GHz
    3GB RAM

I know it wasn't the fastest laptop when it came out, but I do like the size, weight, keyboard and a few other things. However, it's getting incredibly slow.

I have run ccleaner and cleaned the registry a few times, tidied up my files, etc. but since moving media to one cloud storage and files to another most of the files are the previous owners or just temporary bits.

The things I expect are making it run especially slow are; 1) google drive, 2) chrome (I tend to have lot of tabs). I also like using google keep as it's on my mob and tablet. 3) is iCloud Photos / apple stuff. I've moved over to android for my mob but still have iTunes (iPods and old iPhone) and various apple bits and bobs still on there - I'm pretty sure I have them set so nothing apple starts on start-up.

At the moment it really is only used for browsing, word processing word and excel. But the speed and sometimes freezing is frustrating.

Other than reducing my tab addition does anyone have any suggestions? I don't want to spend too much at the moment, especially on an old laptop.

I was looking at RAM upgrades, but have only found 4GB... so will +1GB make that much difference? Maybe solid state storage up-grades. It doesn't seem to have been a popular laptop due to the entry price and speed so there's not a great deal out there in terms of ideas. I also have no idea if there are upgrades I can definitely get hold of.

Also I have no idea where the original windows disk is so I'm wary of a OS re-install.

    Any input appreciated.

  • Does it have a solid state drive? That will make a world of difference. Also, maybe try installing Elementary OS or the like.

  • I would try a rebuild and then assess how things are from there. not much point tying a ribbon round a turd but a rebuild will at least be a fresh one.

  • Does it have a solid state drive?

I don't know. I don't think so. Is their any way to tell?

A quick Google brought these guys up but the cheapest 120gb is £60 and 240gb is £90. Closing on £100 seems like a lot to spend on an old laptop.

One thing I don't understand about solid state is why if I'm mainly using a Web browser and cloud based file storage. Sorry if that sounds thick.

  • What do you mean by a rebuild? Reinstalling the OS?

Maybe an opportunity to Elementary OS?

  • Yes reinstall the os. Windows is cheap these days or free if you know where to get it or move away from Microsoft altogether. like you said above not much point shelling out on ssd when you only paid 100 quid.
or what processes are using all the resources on your machine. bandwidth etc etc etc

  • Quick question, I think I need a new laptop since I haven't owned one in a couple years.

What's the most important thing to get?

Where should I get it from?

I just need a PC to work on from home. Not into games anymore.

I was thinking an i7 with 15 inch 3k screen. Ssd? Windows 10? How many memories do I need now days? Is £500 reasonable for the above?

  • What's "work from home" actually mean? What kind of apps do you run?

  • Technically I want to try study again. I have signed up for an online course so I need something other than my phone to access it.

  • And the 3k is cause I like the retina displays on Apple but can't fucking stand iTunes.

  • And is app short for program? #soeighties

  • What kind of programs (apps) would you be running for work/school though? That really dictates what you'll need.

  • System requirements

Minimum machine requirements 512 MB 2.1 Ghz and internet speed 256 Kbps.

  • XP 512Mb RAM (minimum requirement)
Vista and W7 1GB RAM (minimum requirement)
    Display Resolution 1024x768
    Windows XP, Vista or 7
    Internet Explorer (minimum version 8)
Internet connection (minimum recommended speed of 1MB – we recommend you use a wired connection if possible)

  • If you don't intend to upgrade it within the next few years, get 8gb ram and the SSD.

  • Just saw dell has 4k screens
    :-)

  • What you're running now probably meets those requirements.

You won't need an i7. Save there and focus on the sscree and an SSD if money becomes an issue.

  • My old laptop has finally stopped working.
    Running win7.
Cant find a system image to restore.
Anyone know where i can get one? MS wont accept my product key (proba because it was an OEM one not a private purchase) so wont let me DL one from them.
    Thx

  • What type?
    Pro, home premium?
I have an image of one, a disc of another.

  • Home premium.
Had a thought, if i downgrade my working pc to win7 (thank you 8 for being shit) image that to usb, can i use that to reload the b0rked one?
