Cheers all, I've decided on a third option - rent one for a few months as the surprise and then see how we go from there. Appreciate the help, hopefully I might even progress past Puff the Magic Dragon myself.

Tortec velocity is what I have on my bike, I like the design and simplicity but it lacks rear support / "dogs legs" and my Ortliebs tend to twist to the back. Loading panniers to the front helps, but the other day as I came of a pavement it went into the wheel. Wheel is fine but Ortlieb is badly damaged.
I want to keep the Velocity, nothing else pleases me for that bike when it comes to rear racks. So I'd like to modify it as below... Anyone seen such tweak before? I have some bits of aluminium tube of the right diameter but I'm looking for little elegant connectors, since I cannot weld... Any ideas welcome!

Some sort of metal strip with holes in, another short bit by the top and cross bar to sandwhich the existing rails.
Unsure how thick the metal strip would need to be for it not to bend.

Anyone know where I can get down tube cable stops with flat round bases to suit my brazed on mounts? Preferably black, but I'm not too picky.
It's to replace the concave mount ones I have. I can find flat based ones, but all square.

Thanks, I was hoping to keep using round sections so it would not look too DIY. Would have painted them black and all... But you are right, coming down like you show may be mechanically easier to make it work

You could go diagonal so along a similar line to the blue one but not bending back after.
If you think about it a bit and have the right stuff available you might be able to get it looking better. Maybe something like these with a p clip and cable ties where it crosses the 2nd bit.

But you might need more, in which case a 1ft drum riser, carpeted on the bottom and filled with sand with the matting on top would be the budget answer.
Proper answer is floating flooring. -

How about baltic birch + a few band clamps from the back of the piece bolted through? Wouldn't have to be very thick at all.

I bought some high density foam tiles on eBay that join together by jigsaw edges when my knees were grumbling by prolonged skipping sessions. Recommended.

DID THEY DEADEN THE NOISE?
That is my major concern.

Ok so how many days am I looking at?
I got burned on weds at the lido, yesterday was getting worse and worse but no more sun on it.
Tomorrow cycle instructor training and pain or not I'm going to have to signal turns at some point and with each one my shoulders will hurt just a bit...

What's bike parking like at the pringle velodrome?
Have got track nodder intro session tomorrow morning, and don't want to turn up minimally equipped for secure staffed parking only to find it's bog-standard outdoor two-lock business.
