  • Just a usual upgrade type question. I've been gifted an old Samsung X420 which is handy as I needed a laptop.

    Specs:

    Intel CPU U7300 @ 1.30GHz
    3GB RAM

I know it wasn't the fastest laptop when it came out, but I do like the size, weight, keyboard and a few other things. However, it's getting incredibly slow.

I have run ccleaner and cleaned the registry a few times, tidied up my files, etc. but since moving media to one cloud storage and files to another most of the files are the previous owners or just temporary bits.

The things I expect are making it run especially slow are; 1) google drive, 2) chrome (I tend to have lot of tabs). I also like using google keep as it's on my mob and tablet. 3) is iCloud Photos / apple stuff. I've moved over to android for my mob but still have iTunes (iPods and old iPhone) and various apple bits and bobs still on there - I'm pretty sure I have them set so nothing apple starts on start-up.

At the moment it really is only used for browsing, word processing word and excel. But the speed and sometimes freezing is frustrating.

Other than reducing my tab addition does anyone have any suggestions? I don't want to spend too much at the moment, especially on an old laptop.

I was looking at RAM upgrades, but have only found 4GB... so will +1GB make that much difference? Maybe solid state storage up-grades. It doesn't seem to have been a popular laptop due to the entry price and speed so there's not a great deal out there in terms of ideas. I also have no idea if there are upgrades I can definitely get hold of.

Also I have no idea where the original windows disk is so I'm wary of a OS re-install.

    Any input appreciated.
