  • I'm pretty excited about my build. The frame is currently being powdercoated by the guys at Seabass in Peckham this colour (it's less greeny in reality):

Got some Kenisis Pure CX forks ex demo on the cheap and some Alfine cranks - am I right in thinking the Alfines are the only single ring 130bcd external bearing crankset? If so it sux balls the smallest they come in is 170mm (I have little legs).

The only question hanging over my head is the wheelset - I have every intention of using this for crossracing so it's either Mavic Open Pro or another set of Archetypes laced to some kind of basic track hub with sealed bearings. If I go this way would you think I'd need anything much above Novatec/Planet X hubs? I was thinking about the Surly cross hubs as they're servicable (and can take a QR skewer) but is it strictly necessary? I have max £250 for this wheelset.

The other probably silly option is to get a front 60mm carbon wheel from a Chinese importer to match this 24h hole flip flop aluminium braking surface one I got from 'Jerry' from Speedcarbon11 off the bay. Is 24h too low for xc racing? I'm like 62kg.

Any thoughts from you lovely people?

  • Heads up on Archetypes and Surly hubs - both are on sale at hubjub, 30£ a pop, might save you a few quid for the wheelbuild...

The FC-S500 (Alfine) is basically an FC-4600 (Tiagra) crankset with a chainguard instead of an outer ring, so if you want shorter cranks just get 165mm 4600s and grind the teeth off the outer ring :-)
