  • I had the borrow the front wheel off this so finally the FLO's got dusted off and put to use, just the front for now though.

I also received a tester top cap, installed it and cut down the steerer

  • This has to get together with my F1000sl.

  • Deeper crabon and this would dick all over the HHSRB thread!

  • Yeah! lets meet in the middle and do some CX

  • There's no carbon here. Other than the paint job I don't think this quite has the ridiculousness factor of the HHSRB thread, it's just a banging race bike for little money

  • I've made a bunch of updates to the bike but not to the thread for a while so here goes:

    • Flo wheels F&R
    • New Ultegra cassette with slightly different ratios (12-25 as opposed to 11-23 on the old one)
    • Swapped out the 6500 cranks for Ultegra 6600 for the benefits of external BB and shorter crank length, bringing the fit exactly in line with my other bikes and allowing more pedal clearance through corners
    • Arione saddle and Thomson seatpost

One of the bottle cage bolts has fused to it's nut/rivet which now just spins in the frame rather than unscrewing, anyone got any tips on how to remedy this? Is there a DIY solution or do I just do without a 2nd bottle mount?

  • Removed them a few times by using pliers and gently pulling upwards whilst twisting, friction allows bolt to come loose from the rivet, saying that, I was lucky with them not tightened too much together. After that, I used a rivet gun to pop the nut back into place. Will never be 100%, but it worked to a degree.

Also, That looks fucking great. Digging the Flo's

  • Thanks for the response, that sounds promising. The bolt wasn't done up tight either so hopefully this'll work for me

    Also, cheers :)

  • @Chak no luck with your method, the bolts are domed so there's nothing to grip onto. Do you have any more tricks up your sleeve?

Anyone else know of a method for getting the bolt out?

  • I'm trying to resolve the same issue on my caad5 so I'll let you how it goes!

  • Cheers buddy, that'd be very helpful

  • have you tried holding the rivnut with pliers while turning the bolt with an allen key?

Does the rivnut have enough play that you can wedge something (stanley blade?) under it to stop it turning?

  • I come for the frame but i stay for the sizing. Big men getting low: that's what it's all about.

  • This just needs some SRAM force carbon cranks. Coincidentally, I may have some for sale soon in 172.5 53/39....

  • Cheers @mustard, couldn't get a grip on the nut with pliers but the Stanley blade technique worked a treat.

Now…is there a home fix to lock the rivnut back in place?

  • HA! Glad you approve. I'm definitely at the limit of how far the fit could be stretched out on this and wouldn't have it any other way.

  • We're gonna have to agree to disagree. I think the silver cranks tie in well with all the silver from the group plus I'm getting on really well with 165 so they're staying! Cheers for the offer though

  • Understandable - I have just switched to 165 cranks and it's excellent (hence the offer)

  • Awesome!

As far as re-securing it: I'm not totally convinced this works but a mechanic I used to work with (he had a thing about not using the proper tools even when they were available. Didn't like to read instructions either but that's a rant for another day) would use a long bolt with a nut about 1/2 way up it. Screw the bolt into the rivnut with a couple of washers between nut and rivnut then hold the bolt still and tighten the nut (i.e. unscrew it). The theory being that you pull the rivnut tight with its own threads. If it doesn't work you won't have done any damage anyway and any half decent bike shop should have a rivnut setter an it's a two second job - looks like a pop rivet gun, you screw it into the rivnut then squeeze the handles.

  • ^ that technique works. It's a common bodge when in a pinch without a rivet nut gun. Just make sure you have all the threads of the rivet nut on the screw so the load deforming the rivet nut is spread as much as possible, otherwise (obviously) the risk of stripping threads increases ..

  • Crazy built !!

  • Massive fan of this but you know you've let the entire world down by not putting it in the big ring for the latest picture.

This bike is all about that chainring and you're not using it.

  • Can't believe I missed your comment all those months ago, the bike also has a flat rear tire in the last pics and obviously I wouldn't actually ride it in such a sorry state, big ring only on this!

  • Update:

I recently took a trip for a months riding in the mountains, I was pranging about this frame getting wrecked in transport so when a friend offered me a practically unused Dolan frame in my size for free it seemed like fate that the Cannondale get stripped down and put into storage till next years crit season.

    But...dat paintjob:

I did what I could with 3 half empty rattle cans - black primer, flouro yellow and clear lacquer.

Here it is mid-way through a Colorado century ride

I ummed and ahhed about how to best build the Dolan up for the trip, of course I wanted to ride as well as possible but without chewing through all my nice parts and wheels on mountain descents and in bad weather.
I wanted wide wheels because well you know so used the rear FLO and a cheap pave28/on-one front wheel front my work bike that would see most of the braking/abuse. I used the old 175mm cranks because I thought on that terrain I'd need extra leverage more than the pedal clearance/high cadence benefits of 165s.
The rest of the build kit is straight off the Cannondale aside from fresh sundries (chainrings, cassette, cables and brake blocks) meaning it rode like a brand new bike.

I'd worried that the Dolan might feel a bit pedestrian compared to the Cannondale given the differences in weight, geo (and frankly build quality) but it performed admirably and the bike will likely be staying in this guise till spring.

  • I'm looking to build the Cannondale up again shortly, need to eek out a little more reach and have had this stem in my parts bin a while, apparently it was actually ridden by Cavendish when he rode for Sky. As far as fit goes it's perfect but aesthetically.....what do we reckon?
