Thanks, I was hoping to keep using round sections so it would not look too DIY. Would have painted them black and all... But you are right, coming down like you show may be mechanically easier to make it work

You could go diagonal so along a similar line to the blue one but not bending back after.
If you think about it a bit and have the right stuff available you might be able to get it looking better. Maybe something like these with a p clip and cable ties where it crosses the 2nd bit.

How about baltic birch + a few band clamps from the back of the piece bolted through? Wouldn't have to be very thick at all.

Some sort of metal strip with holes in, another short bit by the top and cross bar to sandwhich the existing rails.
