Just found this thread, I've gone without close shaving for years since I always got ingrown hairs when I used to shave. Tried everything, all the wet shaving tricks and various electric shavers. A couple of days ago I stumbled on something called 'magic shaving powder' which is apparently developed specifically for people with very curly facial hair (ie black guys according to the tin) to prevent ingrown hairs, and I've just tried it for the first time today.
It was a bit messy to apply and didn't smell very good but the results are awesome, no discomfort at all and my 3 day stubble fell right off. Will report back as the beard grows out, you're not supposed to use the stuff more often than 36 h intervals.
