  • Came across a Look KG96 frame online a couple of months back and couldn't help myself. I have always had a soft spot for anything Look, particularly the early carbon builds of the late 80's/early 90's. I love the way you can see the weave through the clear coat, not to mention the outstanding 80's decals....didn't need it, but had to have it!

Couple of things before I get started, this is the first build I have posted on LFGSS so if I miss anything or make any forum fuax pas please bare with me! Second up I am not looking to build something 100% period accurate, simply hoping to pull together a build that does the frame justice! Starting point is a NOS Mavic 851 rear derailleur that I have had lying for a while now waiting for my first geared build.

  • Both the Campagnolo BB and the Shimano 105 headset are in good nick and for the moment I plan to keep them. At some point I would like to upgrade, particularly the headset for something more appropriate.

  • Was missing the seat post locking bolt & locking mechanism when I got the frame and I couldn't find one anywhere. Posted on LLFGS and within hours @specialegg had pointed me in the direction of jejamescycles who were super helpful and supplied the part within the week.

  • Here is a shot of the beautiful Mavic 851 rear derailleur. I had been hunting for the matching front until my LBS came to the rescue and currently have the part on order.

  • Next up was the wheelset and was keen to stick with the Mavic theme. Found this awesome pair of 1 generation Mavic Cosmic on e**y in America. Seller was wanting crazy money, surprise surprise, but held out and eventually landed them for next to nothing (also managed to escape VAT or import duty even better).

  • Looks awesome, similar wheels to my build. Not seen a rear mech like that before, very nice!

Where is your local bike shop? They sound handy!

  • Final two components for the moment (apologies for the screen grab photo): a Look ergostem that I have taken of my Bridgetsone and I bought this awesome 1980s Mavic SSC French crankset 42t & 53t

  • Nice one! This is right up my strasse. Are they aluminium forks?

  • @7VEN thanks man! They are the original carbon forks with aluminium dropouts.

  • Will follow up with more detail + better photos shortly, but absolutely stoked with the build.... Massive thanks to the Tom at peddle pedlar for all his support on the build.

  • First ride

  • ʞool bike!

Love the wheels and matching groupset.

  • Nice work!

The Ergostem looks great: like a great big Gallic shrug.

Modolo levers and Mavic group are also suitably "out there".

Not so keen on the wheels, but that's a personal prejudice.

  • Can't get on board with these stems but everything else is lovely. Nice to see you sticking with the DT shifters.

What's the benefit of the stem? Looks like it can be adjusted for reach etc?

  • Exactly that, fully adjustable...personally love how it looks but can understand not to everyones taste.

Firs time I have ridden with DT shifers, takes a bit of getting used to but loving the feel you get through them.

  • Was this built by pedal pedlar? Saw it on their instagram. Some lovely bits on the bike.

  • Yup as mentioned above Tom at Pedal Pedlar put this together for me.

I purchased the parts over the past few months mostly online, but didn't feel my building skills could do it justice, particular the tricky rear mech

They were a pleasure to deal with and couldn't recommend highly enough!

  • Thanks again to the Pedal Pedlar team for the awesome pics!
