Fixed and Road wheelsets/wheelbuilds - "The Wheel Mill"

Hi folks, my name is Taba, I've been on this site for many years, mainly lurking but maybe 1500 or so posts as well in that time, I lost my previous profile in the switch to microcosm though.

I am in the process of starting a wheelbuilding business called The Wheel Mill based in Manchester. I'll be honest again and say I haven't been building wheels all that long (compared to some), however I have built plenty of sets for myself, friends and others, tested them thoroughly and would not sell a set that I was not 100% confident in. I make sure wheels are true, properly tensioned, with sensible spoke choices and patterns and are fully stress relieved, no spoke twist etc. I probably take a little longer than other professionals to build a set but I want to get them perfect. I offer a full guarantee, and to be honest it wouldn't be hard to find out who I am and where I live, so knowing what you lot are like I won't be ripping anyone off!

Obviously there are other places to buy hand built wheels so why choose me? Well I hope to offer a transparent pricing policy which will make me very competitive, and as a sole trader, working from home (currently) with a turnover well below the VAT threshold, I should be able price match the big boys for components. Then I'll build them for you and deliver to your door, without you having to buy the bits yourself online and take to a wheel builder etc. I list a breakdown of price in all the ads on my page, and will do so for any build you are interested in. If you find components that I offer cheaper from another UK retailer, then let me know and I will try my best to match that price.

Currently I only have limited wheels and components in stock, these are listed on my website. A list of hubs and rims I can order in at short notice from my suppliers are listed under "Custom Wheel Builds" on my site, this list will hopefully expand to shimano hubs and mavic rims very shortly. I am also happy to build with components from other suppliers bought from other retailers, get in touch either over PM on here, The Wheel Mill facebook page or the Contact tab on my site if you want to discuss this.

I have tagged this thread as "test trading" because that is essentially what I am doing. I hope to sell some sets in the next month or so with a view to getting some funding from The Princes Trust for a workshop and a whole lot more stock, so I can offer a much broader range at shorter notice.

If you have any feedback about my site or anything else please get in touch, I am just starting out and need all the help I can get and I really appreciate that this community could be very valuable for that. I know that the photography isn't great and I could do with more pics for the road wheelset but this will be sorted shortly!

Hi Roe, absolutely you can drop things off and pick things up from me any time, based up in Harpurhey/Blackley though. I'm usually free to drop things off with people within the M60, or meet up or whatever, gets me out on my bike anyway .

They look lush, after a set for my build, I was going to go cheaper but I think I will regret it! I think I need to order!!

Those wheels came to £226. They are Miche but I could do similar with novatec hubs for about £220 or On-One (solid but not bling) hubs for £193. I can do any combination of black and silver hubs/spokes/rims and grey rims too, also have all the different H Plus Son rims available if you want to go classic with something like a TB14 or deep with something like a Formation Face, prices are all fairly similar.

Nice looking wheelsets. Have you ever looked in to HED Belgiums? I'm eating those rims up at the moment. Light, wide, and sexy. I keep two either side of my pillow as I sleep.

I've never used them myself but they look really nice, super wide and well reviewed. I'd love it if someone commissioned me to build a set with them (hint hint) as then I'd get to see some in the flesh.

Sorry for late reply @OscarL, not checked on here recently. A quick calculation says I could do On-one MkII sealed bearing hubs, Ryde DP18 Rims and sapim leader spokes for £122.

Is the black wheelset still available?!

Hi Samson, yes I sold the rear and still have the front, but could build you an identical rear if you want a set as above. It was supposed to be a one off price for the ready built wheelset but will do it as an "extra" one off for the same price if you are keen. Will shoot you a pm now.

@badilasradu - I can do individual wheels as well, no problem at all. PM me and let me know what you are after and we can discuss it.

Here is an example of a slightly cheaper option wheelset I built for a local customer. 36 hole Novatec hubs on Ryde Chrina's, still look pretty smart in my opinion, despite the radial front which I wouldn't have gone for myself :P
