  • Just been giving my bike a service; I had it powdercoated at Armourtex a year ago and was pretty happy, but on close inspection it looks like there is rust bubbling happening underneath the lacquer on a few areas, notably on the head tube, left fork blade and on downtube above bottle bosses.

I'm worried that if I leave it the frame, a Roberts Audax Pro with S+S couplings, will be ruined, but equally, a powdercoat should not be doing this and last longer than a year?

I store it inside, in the dry, and clean it after every wet ride so it's not like it's abused or anything, and there's no way water is collecting in the frame as the cables are all external and there's a hole drilled in the BB shell to allow any water that may find its way in to escape again...

Has anyone had similar or able to shed light on wtf is going on? I'm a bit pissed off.

  • Send them the photos explaining the situation. IDK much about paint, but IME power coats are usually brutally durable so your situation seems odd. My guess would be someone didn't prepare the surface properly.

  • Done and replied: they're offering to re-coat adding an anti-oxidant primer gratis so it seems you're right with regards the original frame prep. I still can't figure out how moisture is getting in to those areas-even the bit on the left fork blade is totally cut/chip free. Anyway... best to get it sorted.

I think it makes colour choice more limited though so no more electric-purple beastie :(
