The same as there's a bunch of bikes for Africa projects, there are projects to take old phones, refurbish them and put them to use over there. Obviously Africa is a big place with lots of countries so you probably want to consider which project you're donating to. Most of them centre around key workers so they can work more effectively. Is it "eco"?
Also worth considering is that the WEEE directive places an onus on businesses to keep decommissoned electronics out of landfill and recycle them. A lot of retailers will offer to "take your old one away" for free. Most of them turn it into another revenue stream but on balance, I think that's fair enough.
