Worked for me. I like it although Siri doesn't seem to work with the Logitech webcam microphone (it did say it wasn't supported when I set it up however...)

Argghhhh I need an activation key.... I assumed I had one as I have 7 installed... bah.

You do need to of put yourself on the 'waiting list' for it. There is a little Windows icon on the task bar that checks if your computer is suitable. I also think you need SP1 installed as well.

This is a crap way of doing it. Obviously it's going to work if you use the media creation tool, duh.
If you don't want to bother with the media creation tool...
Find the registry key below in regedit
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade]Create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value with Name = "AllowOSUpgrade” (without the quotes), and set the Value to 0x00000001
Run cmd as an administrator, type in "wuauclt.exe /updatenow".
Press return, run Windows Update, jobs a good un.
This is a much faster way of forcing the upgrade.

My thoughts on Windows 10 so far: generally good but typefaces look horrific in Edge. All the edges are jagged and poorly rendered. Ew. I will be sticking to Chrome.

Or just download a single program...
Duh...

Yeah but then you have to make a USB drive don't you - how long does that take? In my previous experience, a very long time, but maybe that's just me/my PC. Those instructions are a few minutes work.
-
• #1984
The name is misleading you. It allows you to upgrade and doesn't require you to make any USB installation drive. It's much simpler than your suggestion.
-

Oh yeah. Sorry, I didn't actually read that properly. I was sure it said something about making a USB.
I will do that soon anyway so I've got recovery media.

Forgive the dim Luddite question, but does anyone know how I might set about reinstalling W7 on a laptop when I don't have the CD/DVD, just a product key on the laptop? Do people round here have CDs with W7 that can be used with my product key?

Get the official iso here from microsoft

You might be able to request a restore disc from the laptop maker's website.
Your product key probably won't work with retail installers.
-

That was my first port of call, but it told me that my copy of W7 was pre-installed by the mfr and wouldn't accept my product code.

Thoughts on a 32" 1440p monitor vs a 28" 4k monitor for docking my Surface? Mostly for proofreading, some amateur photo editing and watching films and that.
Leaning towards the 32", seems a nice panel; not sure how useful 4k will really be or whether it will bring lightroom to a grinding halt every time I change something. OTOH it's more expensive

Holy shit that actually worked on my windows 7 spotter edition!
I like!
Also, DayZ runs better in 10.

Fuuuuuuu-
How do I get 10? I don't have a legit key.
-
• #1994
Dunno... There's always a way. I just took a punt and tried that method and was surprised it worked at all. Quite liking it - it boots much faster, uses less space (which is big when you only use a 60GB partition) and the fans run less when playing games, probably due to direct X11 working better or something. Fuck knows.
Anyway... Its worth it - and that's coming from an OS X fanboi.

Spotter.

Bootcamp drivers aren't that great though. The volume button doesn't work but all the important stuff is fine.

Had my first Win10 crash tonight. Booted but took ages to load after the login screen. Then a couple of 'this hasn't worked' windows. Also all my apps disappeared and had to use the power button to reboot.
Rebooted and all is fine again.

Im about to pull the trigger on a new windows laptop with i7-5500u (2.4ghz dual core)
I have been using a macbook since early 2008 with core 2 duo 2.4ghz dual core!
I thought processing power was supposed to double every year lol. But was wondering how much better the modern processor is?
-
• #1999
well there are also i7 quad cores etc... processing speeds def have increased a lot. I would ignore the "ghz" thing as it doesn't mean that much any more
-
• #2000
Its also just a baseline frequency - that model will boost to 3 Ghz when it needs to. Also, you get four cores instead of two and i7 does hyperthreading so the OS sees it as 8 cores.
There's a lot more to it that frequency.
Holy cow. Is that actually going to work? Just downloading on a Mac at work to try and instal over Windows 7 on my Bootcamped Macbook at home...
