Perfect, that's pretty much what I want to do.
Is there a specific usb cable you use (presumably a double ended mico one?) just had a quick google and there aren't many I can see

I believe you would want a female usb cable for your tablet. Then you can just plug you garmin cable into that. Have a look at Amazon and eBay, should be easy to pick one up for not much money

Easiest just to get a USB OTG cable and plug a normal cable into that.

I used two cables a USB OTG cable and my normal garmin usb to micro usb.

Have done this using an edge 800 and an Acer Iconia, also tried it with my galaxy S4.
Both had enough power to allow file management using ES file explorer.
My cubot gt72 could not power the garmin.
