  • I'd go for a PTJ. The race cape is more for bad conditions in the summer, as it's not at all warm IME. The PT Softshell is good in grim conditions, but it's pretty warm. I find the best all-rounder is a PTJ. Good in drizzle or showers, and good for down to below zero with a winter baselayer. It's the jacket I use most, by far, in the winter.

  • Gabba: 1
    PTJ: 1

  • I have a Gabba and a PTJ. I wore the PTJ once all winter, and the Gabba probably once a week. Just bought a second Gabba. No brainer.

  • Eh?

  • So, ideally the PTJ (and the Gabba for that matter) cut out the middle man of a long jersey then? You wear it on its own with an adequate baselayer for the temps expected - for example short sleeved merino in Autumn and thicker long sleeved merino in Winter

If so then maybe I could skip buying a long sleeved jersey altogether (my wife would be pleased)

  • What's wrong with the old one?

  • Gabba: 2
    PTJ: 1

  • yup Gabba + baselayer pack ftw!

  • Gabba plus whatever baselayer for the conditions + nanoflex armwarmers and occasionally a gilet did me through the whole winter.

  • Saves washing if I have two and want to ride on consecutive days. Plus I could get one for £75, so rude not to.

  • Gabba is the single best piece of kit I can remember buying. Nothing else works as well in such a variety of conditions. It literally made half of my cycling wardrobe redundant in one go. If you ride in winter (or autumn or spring) and you don't own one, you are doing it wrong.

  • I have the l/s gabba - if its cold enough for me to want to wear it (<12c ish) then I want sleeves. The sleeves are also better at keeping the rain off than nano-flex warmers in my experience.

  • Wjeres the link for those cheapo ones? I want another

  • So, for the purpose of this thread: are we talking Gabba jacket or ls/ss jerseys?
Or do i just go and buy all the things?

  • Well, I've got PTJs and Gabbas, and I wore the PTJs many times every week of the winter and never wore the Gabba once. For winter riding I prefer long sleeves, though, and both my Gabbas are SS versions.

  • Gabba + nanoflex armwarmers master race.

@prevailrob Gabba SS in my case. Much more versatile.

  • £95 at Evans and Wiggle, got hooked up with a £20 Evans voucher here though.

  • Got 'em both. Still prefer a PTJ in the winter though.

  • Obviously not working hard enough :)

  • It's probably because I'm out in the biting cold winds of the Fens rather than cruising around the comforts of the Home Counties... ;)

  • Ah I got one of the green cannondale ones from Tredz for £70. Pro kit wanker.

  • Ha!

Well I've got both, but I find that the ptj just ends up soaked with sweat when I'm on long rides or doing intervals. It also doesn't fit as well (I've got got the older ptj). I hardly used it last winter, except the coldest days.. And now I have a castelli winter jacket for those days.

So if anyone wants a size L ptj in blue - PM me. I won't be using it again.

  • Remind me why we are discussing winter kit by the way? It's July ffs.
