  • The hub has arrived today and is moving like a stuck pepper mill :-/

Is that necessary to generate electricity?

  • Yeah.
Should be like riding into a headwind. Don't worry. It'll make you fitter. ;)

  • In sincerity when nothings running on my SON it'll spin for ages. When I plug something in, it stops a LOT sooner.

  • it won't feel like that when you lace it up to a wheel, don't worry.

  • My local bike shop had a SON on some very deep section HED carbon. Result no worries I am going to lace up my pepper mill.

  • The pepper mill is because of the magnets. Once in a wheel it will feel less pepper mill like. Once in the forks with 65kg of German pushing it the pepper mill effect will completely vanish.

  • if it's not built up yet then the pepper mill thing is totally normal.. it's less noticeable when it's a wheel so don't worry.

  • Peppermill is just 10g over advertised or am I being undersold on the coffee?

  • Did you just go into a deli just to weigh your new hub?

You should have got a Schmidt, they run smoother than a Royce even when not laced.

  • We can have a spin test soon. Taiwan - Deutschland 1:0

  • Ludders, if you wanted to spin test a Schmidt hub you could have tested mind last night. It was parked right next to yours, albeit on the floor out of the way rather than on a table so you could see it through the window.

You would find that it spins faster than a German trying to decide whether to kick Greece out of Europe or whether to bung them another couple of Marks at payday loan rates.

  • @Skülly how are you getting on with that b&m light with USB? I'm getting approx nothing out of mine on tour (fully loaded mind). Charging my stuff is the biggest pain of the trip so far
Edit: just had a read of the datasheet, I need to try it with the light turned fully off. I thought that wasn't an option because of the daytime running light or whatever, will report back after tomorrow's ride

  • Hi
I have to admit that so far I've not really attempted to charge anything (it would be fone if I did) for any substantial time. I will report back when I do. Can't believe how amaze the light is though.

  • I just built up my Schmidt SON 28 Klassik (bought in the end of stock sale at a German bike shop, when the new style SON 28 came out) and put it on my beater to try it out. @Skülly isn't lying - I think it rolls better than my Miche track hub does. You can definitely notice the added resistance from the dynamo running when up on the stand (even the slight notchiness caused by the magnets), but riding, it's negligible. The new SONs are even smoother, apparently.

I'm just running a S&M light at the moment, will get something commensurate to the hub at a later date, once I've built the Randonneur I have planned...

  • Been riding in the rain and light still working; anything charged?

Just bought as the light seems to be working as a spacer for the front brake.

  • I could do with a spacer or two, do you have any spare change?

  • 1.07kg for the dynamo wheel.

  • I'm wondering if it is too late for me to get one of these built up. Damn my organisational skills

  • The ordering is one thing, the getting someone to build it is another :-)

  • CNC will build up a wheel for you. Mine where here within a week i think.
