Ive wondered about this before, and I see what you mean about the chamfered edge but then I came across a couple of things;
No.1
http://www.pedalpedlar.co.uk/collections/headsets/products/campagnolo-c-record-vintage-1-threaded-headset
Did they make Chorus/Athena headsets with drilled upper cups? Or have they listed this incorrectly?No2.
I have a Campagnolo headset on a Raleigh track bike from the 80's that has a stack height of exactly 38.5mm with chamfered edges and as far as I can find out Chorus/Athena headsets have a larger stack height.I haven't yet taken my headset apart to see if the top cup is drilled (it will happen tomorrow) but its a bit of a head scratcher.
Anyway let me know what you think :)
As this thread comes up high in google searches I think it's a good idea to clear up some misinformation presented in this thread.
C record headsets are easy to tell apart from Chorus and Athena headsets of the same era, even when installed. C-Record doesn't have the chamfer/edge. See image.
