  • Right, so, the headtube snapped on my current tandem a few months ago whilst on a tour of East Sussex. I cried and my heart was broken but it wasn't the end of the world as we'd had 5 years of good use out of it, it was heavy as a heavy thing, and wasn't that pleasant to look at. It was a 1979 Pashley Ladyback that I used to take my daughter everywhere on which she loved.

Around the same time that it broke, I met Dammit at SE beers. Things got onto the topic of Tandems and he suggested I speak directly with Matt.

Fast forward a few months and my deposit has now been paid. I don't believe they've built one yet and some new tooling needs to be purchased and workshop modifications done but Matt was keen to take this on. Tube selection hasn't been completely nailed down yet but there's been talk of Paragon Machine works dropouts, di2, a belt for the timing chain, hydraulic disc brakes, sloping top tube with long seatpost so my daughter can ride it both now (aged 8) and when she's older, 700c wheels & comotion tandem disc fork.

I've got a very very rough early stage mock up of what it looks like (sans drop bars) but can't seem to upload to photobucket from my phone, possibly corrupt file and I'm out on holidays with no access to email. Can some kind soul p.m me their email address and post it up for me please?

I think Matt said the build would take four months which is fine by me so should be ready for a planned tour of the Scottish Islands next summer.

  • Rad.

  • Are you watching @6pt

  • Yes!

  • Cool.

  • You could fade ALL THE COLOURS on a bike this long!

  • really nice

is TT shorter than BN's head tube?

  • is TT shorter than BN's head tube?

Ha.. I did wonder if this bike might be any longer.

  • Yeah @6pt! Ho says buy! #BUY

  • So, all knowledgeable di2 people, riddle me this.
How would I set di2 up with a tandem groupset? As tandem groupsets appear to come standard as triples, and di2 only works with double chainsets, what do you do? Remove one of the chain rings?
Also, it appears that the di2 XTR stuff is now compatable with the Ultegra di2 stuff so could use a XTR rear derailleur for bigger cassette to give same ratio.
Looking to use the FSA SLK Light tandem crankset.

  • I've no idea but what a lovely project!

  • One of the guys in my club runs a nuts di2 tandem. 10-speed I believe. Belt drive one-side.

  • Is that an emergency V break under the stocker's seatpost collar?

  • Directly pointed towards the tyre.

  • the fsa cranks are so ugly! y u no shimano ultegra tandem crankset and work on hacking the di2 to give you an extra click somewhere? (or use mechanical for front shifting?)

  • I'd be tempted to try to get the left hand arm from that Ultegra tandem crankset, and pair that with two standard 6800 cranksets*, running the 6870 mid-cage rear mech on a long hanger (if needed) to run an 11-42 cassette.

I'd then use Ultegra Di2 throughout the drive train, with a belt on the NDS, and probably take advantage of both sprint shifters and a pave shifter up front.

*If the tandem crankset axle is not longer than standard

  • A totally different choice of transmission and bars,
but the details about the tubing might help.

  • haven't the made 6800 tandem chain sets?!

if they had you could just put a standard double chain ring on there and had no problem with the use of di2 (apart from needing a wider range of gears...

  • Cheers @6pt,
This is all making my head hurt!
You're right, that Ultegra stuff is nice. You really think the FSA stuff is gash or just the branding on it?

  • FSA stuff tends to get pretty poor reviews. Usually highly inflated RRP to make OTP bikes with cranksets look good value.

Hulsroy has had some bad experiences with pedal inserts, detailed here

  • branding is ugly, gear is serviceable but you pay over the odds as an end user, their main market is passing their bits on cheap to OEMs. / what tim said.

  • Fair enough. Reckon you could purchase the Ultegra Triple tandem set, remove the 30t ring, use as a double with the new di2 Hydraulic Ultegra levers? Would need 11 speed chainrings? Or am I not thinking of something else ?!? Achieving tandem greatness seems difficult.
