  • Honestly, someone gave me a voucher for the JKC, I don't just spend all my income on kitchen knives... Murata 80mm paring blade.

  • Squirrels for the pot?

Fucking hell. And to think I once split a pack of sasuages with @edmundro.

  • A few years before that fateful night I used to live in a van in the woods in Derbyshire, eat whatever I could afford, failing that I'd eat whatever the gamekeeper gave me. Squirrel is the business....
I don't really miss that time!

  • Food thread

  • Wow! That's a beauty!

Be careful with the middle layer of steel though (the one with the edge). It can and will have miniature chips if you aren't careful enough with that edge degree. Nearly invisible but will not improve the sharpness. For the rest it's an awesome steel and I wish I could buy it somewhere. It's a great steel for an outdoor knife as well.

  • Has anyone been stopped and had to provide a "reasonable reason" for carrying it?

I just bought a leatherman sidekick (blade is less than three inches and much shorter than my SAK Outrider) mainly gonna use it for trips and going from home to the allotment... would that be an acceptable reason?

  • I would say that's a perfectly good reason to carry a blade.
I imagine everything is about context and at the discretion of the officer should you get stopped.
If you were wearing a trackie, stinking of skunk and found with a tiny non-locking blade it'd probably be taken more seriously than a 'respectable looking'(whatever that means) person carrying something that falls short of the carry laws on their way to the allotment/work. I often get home to realise I'm still carrying my work knife and have no fears of being found at fault if I was stopped.

TL:Dr - carry whatever you need if it's justifiable and you're not a complete scumbag.

  • I am very lucky indeed and will take good care of it. I have a couple of other Aogami blades which don't go near bone or hard seeds etc. I was told the Takeda Nakiri I have can be brittle due to his extreme hardening so I don't go too apeshit chopping stuff, I hope it'll last. That's Aogami super which is even rarer I think.

  • Having just moved out of London my Leatherman charger is back on the belt full time, feels gooood. Always felt a bit iffy carrying it in town, especially after dark so just stopped using it.

  • Rapscallion - "I've done nuffin rong!"
    PoPo - "jolly good"

    Such a British exchange

  • Feel a bit sorry for the rapscallion tbh, didn;t help himself carrying a bottle of rum too though...

  • When I worked on the markets I carried a Swiss Army knife. I got stopped and searched on my way to work once, 7.30 am on a Sunday morning. They asked me what the knife was for, I told them, they thanked me and I went on my way. No problem.
If, however, you go to the pub after the allotment, and there is some unpleasantness which leads to the knife being found in your procession, then things get a lot less friendly.

  • Cheers,

just saw this..do not feel sorry for the rapscallion especially as he continues to saw he did nufink wrong

  • also once when I was doing work experience on a farm this sheep got stuck in a wire fence and I couldn't get its neck out so if suffocated, if I had had my leadermann then I could have saved it.

  • welly boots / hind legs opportunity...

  • This is my first knife.

Still a work in progress. The edge is off by half a millimeter from front to back. Need to adjust the shape of the handle a bit. It's already pretty comfy but it needs to look better. Finger groove needs to become a bit bigger. Not sure if I'm going to add another groove or change the shape of the back of the handle. Still looking for a cheap manual drill to make holes in the handle for the pins. Trying to make this knife without electrical tools to make it as difficult as possible. So far I've used a saw and two files. I already made a filing jig but the edge needs to be perfect before I start using the jig. I'm also going to make my own Micarta for the handles. Knife going to be a heavy duty camp knife. Chopping wood etc.

O2 tool steel, 5.4MM. Going to be hardened to around 60 Rockwell.

  • stubby machete, nice..!

  • .

  • Just a big camp knife as a first one. Next knife is going to be more like this:

  • Aaron gough's knives are so nice.
