XT and some spokey dockeys?
-
• #7564
Also, why are they still hanging onto cup and cones? That's taking built in obsolescent a tad too far...
-
• #7565
I heard new XT use sealed bearings. I don't really care who makes the hub as long as it doesn't break, has a simple bolt-on disc fitting and the driver is noisy as hell.

Nowt wrong with cup and cone bearings.

THIS is the new polo trend
-
• #7572
Most touring wheel builds I do/see are on quality loose ball hubs, later model deores, xt, xtr (not seen in a while presume xtr is now nitride & candy floss coated titanium ceramic balls?). Especially for folk going to ass end of nowhere, try finding a mavic freehub bush thing in ass end of Burma, 1/4" loose balls be aplenty though

There's absolutely nothing wrong with loose ball, if anything they're going to perform better than cartridge for for polo use; less resistance under cornering load.
Just because something is cheaper for hub manufacturers to machine and tool for, and is easier for people who don't maintain their shit to rescue, that doesn't under any circumstance make it a better performing hub.
The best performing hubs I own are cup & cone (both roadbikes, trackbike, and tourer). The only reason I didn't build polo wheels on loose ball was from a maintenance perspective. I'd only make the decision again on an MTB/beach cruiser.
