If you inflate them enough to stay on the rims, the rims will explode

RLY? I've had 2.3" MTB tyres on a 15mm internal width rim.

Hmmm, the wheel downstairs with the 50mm Big Apple sitting on it, happily inflated to 50psi with no signs of structural failure over the last 24 hours, suggests this is not necessarily true.
