• PT is more convenient for aero testing, as you don't need to factor in drivetrain losses.

  • I'm not looking for brilliant accuracy

    stages

  • I was being sarcastic. The "brilliant accuracy" was more about not needing L/R balance than being +/- 1% compared to +/- 2%.

Seriously though, I do appreciate the suggestions.

  • P2M means the same powermeter regardless of Wheel chioce.

Covers for the PT means the same powermeter for both training (windy), and aero set-up.

Personally I'd use the PT to start. Maybe build the bike With a modular crakset that can be upgraded to P2M later.

  • The point is to (deplete your gycogen stores and) take yourself near a blood sugar low.

    don't push push

Don't push above or don't do. y u make no sense?

You can do this with or without the fasting bit.

  • Quite a lot of the ones I've seen are skinny old dudes. The doesn't stop the requirement to be able to smash it up some sopping wet Welsh mountain after caning two fry-ups and 37 pots of tea.

  • My power to weight is probably pretty bad but I'd smoke most of this thread. They're all too busy looking for spare batteries for their Stages.

  • ^^ Sure. All shapes. All cakes.

  • I'd smoke most of this thread.

Oak smoke, bbq slowly then pull the meat off.

  • You've made my bbq loin moist.

  • shudder

  • I've got a P2M S-type on my TT bike. Never regretted the decision, let's put it that way. Seeing as a Force 22 crank can have a P2M spider added, and you don't have to change the crank arms/chainrings/BB, it would seem a tempting option if your bike had Force 22.

  • My PC at work autocorrects english from a dictionary containing 4 words I think. Anything it doesnt reconise it assumes is a name and adds acapital too. Twat PC.

    Dont push past.

Z2 will empty you soon enough.

Just my opinion. I'd stick to low Z2 or below myself. But my aim is to be a faster cyclist. So dont want inhibit recovery in any way. Actually smash a 'Mutant* muscle gain shake' after a hard effort currently as I'm over training (happens to have a good carb:protien ratio, and is cheaper than dedicated recovery mixes). Im not really coming from a weight loss veiwpoint right now.

    (*LEAVE HUMANITY BEHIND!)

  • Dont push past.

Yes. Ok, we are totally on the same push push push push PAGE!

    ;-)

  • Not strictly power, but how do you go about setting heart rate zones?

I've got a reasonably accurate FTHR and Max Heart Rate. Initially I've been using Joe Friel's zones, but Zone 1 felt too wide (up to 81% of FTHR), and everything else squashed in, so I've gone back to what Strava was setting based on a max heart rate.

Any recommendations on numbers? or is it best to adjust figures as fitness changes based on perceived exertion?

  • Thanks.

That seems to shift everything up a 5% or so as compared to Strava's zones, which makes sense given my FTHR is quite high at nearly 95% of max HR. I'll give these a go.

  • I'm after advice guys, I'm in the market for a powermeter as i want to improve my training (track oriented mainly). I have 2 bikes with omnium on both, one is track only when the other is a track / training and run around / commute. I want to track my performance on both as i train on both bike.
Now i need as well a computer as i was using an old iphone with tomtom for GPS but i want to upgrade everything. I'm already set with the garmin 1000 bundle.
I don't really want to changed all my cranksets. Now i looked at the various options, i like the idea of the vector 2S as it would be easy to switch bike. But for that price, i can easily afford 2 of those bad boy:
    http://www.merlincycles.com/stages-power-sram-rival-gxp-64177.html

And i guess it would fit the omnium? Saw that link few pages back, didn't know it existed.

Any opinion or suggestion more than welcome

  • Same crank length on both baiks?

  • Having done it myself I would avoid using stages on an omnium, as it changes the q factor by 5-6mm - you can compensate but its a bodge. If you want to use stages, you are best off switching to dura ace cranks and getting a specific 7710 stages arm.

If you want accurate track power the cheapest solution will be a second hand track powertap.

The best solution is a Srm (£££ though) and the next best thing is a power2max track - though that will reastrict you to silly rotor track cranks.

People here may disagree but Vectors are a stupid idea as pedals are essentially disposable parts in racing, and you have to use crappy exustar pedals. There is a reason the Garmin Cannondale team riders dont bothet with them, even when they are paid to use them. Not to mention that to accurately install them you need a torque wrench.

  • @Thuekr good question, i should have mentioned 170 on both

@dan appreciate the input. Yes SRM is expensive, i wouldn't mind paying £2k for it but i would only use it on my main track bike so wouldn't keep track of all the intervals training and miles i do with the other bike on the road + rollers. And buying 2 SRM to put a £2k crankset on a commute / rough training bike sound stupid to me.

Good to know it doesn't work very well with the omnium before i pull the trigger....glad i asked.

I see your point about pedal and i agree with it (i have a torque wrench already). It's only because the system is easy to switch between bike. But in reality, i can't even bother switching from my cleats to flat when i use flat shoes to commute so i would probably never switch those anyway.

Ok back to square 1.......rethinking time.

  • Once you have the torque wrench (Nice to have anyway) and crows foot attachment. Its pretty quick to install Vectors.

You need to be happy using the pedals though.

  • If you're lazy buy a P2M. I've owned mine for a couple years and only touched it once to change battery. Otherwise I havent given it the slightest thought. Its just there.
