He thinks he might have torn his Achilles. To get back on the bike and face a few thousand km in that condition is nails. Total respect.

Kristoff had to go back and ride a section again. I'm not sure how he found out. Perhaps one of the controllers told him or he noticed people mentioning it on twitter or something.

The controllers (at the top of the Lovcen climb) saw his path from the tracker, so he had to descend, go back to where he took the ferry (he could take the ferry to do that), then ride round the Bay of Kotor and climb up to Lovcen control again.

The rules specifically called out the Kotor ferry as banned but Kristoff admitted he was a little tired when he got to that point.

Luckily it was close enough for him to go back and undo his mistake. If it had been a 200km ride back to where the verboten ferry was used I'm guessing many people would just have either given up or carried on knowing they won't be an official finisher.

-The chainset is a mid-compact (52/36-tooth) and I have a 12-25 cassette which I think is just about right.

Very surprised by the choice of 12-25, even skinny is using 11-32.
