Thanks for the advice guys. When do people who don't work at home normally get kittens, if it's best to be around them most of the time?
I think we're going to adopt my OH's mum's poor old cat instead for now. He's about 10 and really friendly, but has seriously taken to self harming by licking a sore patch on his side until it's raw. My fiancée thinks it's been brought on by the stress of two yappy little dogs which haven't always been around. Hopefully moving to a quiet house near Wanstead Flats will cure what ails him.
I think some people either have some sort of rota, like there is always a family member / flatmate around etc, or they are just slightly irresponsible...
