Probably couldn't. Intensity of the whole race was pretty high; he was only able to properly make his attacks stick once Froome and the rest of Sky were significantly fatigued/ill - as in the final two mountain stages. He did attack Froome on the first Pyrenean stage, but if you remember Sky reeled that in pretty smartly and Froome launched a counter move that Quintana couldn't follow.

Anyone else think Movistar fucked their chances of winning overall to make sure Valverde was on the podium? They rode a pretty conservative pace, perhaps scared of Sky too much, and backed Valverde too much rather than going all in for Quintana
