  • Yeahhhhh... What tyre have you got on it?

  • 20mm Corsa CX.

    Can you still get 19mm?

  • No... 20mm Corsa CX comes up large in my experience.

  • Seriously photogenic. Epic shot.

  • That pic of you riding... you either have really weird leg veins or you have some kind of aero device stuck to your shin? WTF?

  • some kind of aero device stuck to your shin

No such device exists, and if it did you definitely shouldn't ask about it. Carry on with your day.

  • Yeah: just measured at 21.6mm.

  • You might say that, but I couldn't possibly comment...

  • Hed3 = Winning

  • U no dat.

So much lighter than the OG Spesh I had previously and super-true.

The valve stem sticks out a little: the hole looks off-centre, so I might need to tweak that...

  • babe

    Correct term is 'bae'.
Please remember it for next time.

  • You might say that, but I couldn't possibly comment...

interesting... moving along, nothing to see here etc.

  • I want to tap the axle of my HED3 to take screws, but the existing aluminium axle isn't suitable for modding.

The bearing seats measure 12mm and the only axles I can find in that diameter are through-axles.

Can I butcher one of these, or is there another option?

Any suggestions for neat spacers appreciated too.

The Ti axle is ridiculously expensive, but you can use the axle and lock nuts out of a Shimano HB-M525 or 756, then you just need the bearing seats out of something which uses 12mm ID bearings on an M10 axle (Surly? or ask SPNK as they probably use the same bearing in their Fixxer clone) and some spacers to take up the slack

I'm part way through doing the same sort of thing on an old Spesh spoke.
Bought a track axle kit from HED for the correct bearing seats, combined with a cheap steel QR axle, tapped, from the parts drawer.

  • track axle kit from HED

Is that M9×1.0 thread? If so, the axle could come from any cheap Shimano road hub; I actually bought a Sora hub before deciding to go M10 at both ends with a step down at the ends of the front axle to fit 9mm fork ends.

  • Yup, same thread.
Mine came from a Halfords QR axle kit (BC discount; buying car paint the same day). Its cones measure just under 12mm at the bearing surface, so these could be used (like Andy's Instagram post above)...
I ordered the kit specifically for the bearing seat nuts, due to using a converted rear (old UG freehub model with a custom bearing insert), deciding it was better to have more surface area touching the bearing bore, since the DS bearing/insert is effectively held in by the nuts.

  • Thanks both.

M10 + SPNK looks promising: I dug out my SPNK Fixxer and the bearing seat is pretty much perfect and found a rear axle out of a R501.

  • Nice, looks very neat!

  • Could have been made for the job.

I've dropped SPNK a line and will report back.

  • Update from SPNK:
"We have recently altered the design of the bearing nuts slightly: they are now made from stainless steel (to increase strength) and the diameter of the flange is approximately 2mm narrower. If you see the attached photos, the new one is on the right.

Hard to tell from your photo whether it will still suit your purposes, but to give you an idea of size, the flange of the bearing nut is now flush with the edge of the sealed bearing which came with the Fixxer."

So they'll do the job, but not as neatly as the old ones; however, it's still a neater solution than traditional locknuts, so I'm not that fussed.

That won't fit your fork ends, which is why I suggested the axle out of an M525 or M756 front hub, as they already have the required step down to 9mm at the ends.

  • Thanks, didn't realise that, assumed I'd have to get them turned down.
