  • @sacredhart Definitely 90's DA - it'll still work well and look good. Otherwise you could try to find a silver SRAM rival group. That may work well? Nice frame too.

  • Just something I picked up at Leroy Merlin some time ago, can't remember the brand but it's a thermal shock penetrating oil. Dunno if it's better than any other oil out there really.

  • No. Not without a cassette which would cost at least ten times more than the hub.

  • Technically you can simply take off the smallest cog and run it as 10 speed instead, but then again, it's 10 speed.

    Best to get a new hubs or wheel.

  • For the blue/chrome bike I'm trying to decide whether to use this saddle or not, the blocking point really is I can't really decide on a bar tape choice to match it. Not helped by being indecisive over the brake levers to choose (and hence hood colour).

    For the brake levers I want ideally an aero routed set, and as this is a French bike being built up largely with French parts I want to keep them as close to home as possible. Unfortunately there's really not much out there I can find and I keep ending up looking at the early shimano ones (which I do quite like), or a (possibly too) cheap set of Dia Compe.

    Other saddles I could put on would be a white Concor (wouldnt stay white long..), grey suede Arius, black Rolls, Concor or Regal.

    Hub choice is easier as I've got them, it's just down to making a choice which set to use now:

    Each 32 hole, cartridge bearing, rolling equally (ridiculously) well. Spidel ones are easier to adjust/change the bearings if ever needed and look a little nicer IMO, and would allow a full-spidel build. Mavic ones have the nice panto, nothing wrong with them at all really except maybe i'd want them on a full-Mavic build some day.

  • If you use black or white tape it doesn't "have to" match your saddle.

    Trying to match that saddle to tape will just end up looking gash.

    I would choose white, regardless of what colour hoods you choose.

    (All IMO etc)

  • Treating a 1957 B83 Brooks, so far 2 heavy coats of wax balm have been soaked up, coat 3 now and leave again for a few days.
    Feeling more pliable now.
    I think what came with saddle is just going to get the oily rag treatment, a strip and clean and only painting what really needs it to save it.

    Regardless of tubeset details, it looks excellent and I'm sure it will ride fantastic, lucky find!

    Is the fork threaded or ahead?

  • Yeah the seattube turns out the be Max as well. Thanks, lucky indeed.

    Fork is threaded. As for plans; I'm going all black components. First I thought of Di2 for the groupset, but I think I'm gonna put a nice black Campy groupset on it. Probably along with some carbon wheels. Should be good.

    @Dry's Langdale served as my inspiration, so thanks for that!

  • True, but also might be a bit boring. I've seen a couple of classic frames on this forum built up with modern Shimano and although they admittedly look and work good, I might go a different route (hence the Campagnolo). But nothing is set in stone yet.

  • Campag can be nice I agree, personally I prefer everything about Shimano, it's down to personal preference though.

  • A few updates towards my workhorse:

    Happy now I have got a pannier rack and bag that will help me commute to work a little more comfortable and provide a less sweaty back upon arriving to work. (This is really my first time owning a bike with a rack so this is pretty all new to me).

    The bag is a little small as I really went for these bag mainly due to how they look, but it does have a lot of compartments and loads of different way to access the bag.

    I took the new gal for a test ride and initial impression is that it is very stable and even with the one side pannier it didn't make the bike off balance, the only thing that concerns me is that the bike does weigh a lot more now at the rear (without a fully loaded bag) and if the tyres will be able to cope with this type of stress on my everyday commute.
