  • sheesh, there is no issue with Paves on rims... to date I fitted them without tools or levers to a pair of Archetypes, Open pros, Superstar Pave 28's and some 3T accelero rims. All fine to get on and off. Get some thumbs!

Almost forgot about the Gravel Kings! These are great too. I currently have them on my gravel/beater wheels. They are more firm and a little jigglier than Open Paves but they are definitely tougher. And they make a great sound skidding.... Got them in 28mm from winstanleys for £23 each.

@owl The Pave's will be good but consider cancelling the order and going for the gravel kings... sorry...

  • I've found Vittorias to be a bit tight on initial application, but they stretch with use.

  • Ha, thanks for this, gravel kings do look a good option but think I'll stick with the Pave for now, otherwise I'll find myself stuck in a constant loop of order-cancelling and indecision. I'm very easily swayed by other people's opinions...

  • What about TB14's though? I didn't have problems with any other rims.

I am finding Gravel Kings really good so far. I've only done about 150 miles since they were fitted a week ago but they are lighter and faster than I thought they'd be and definitely good on gravel.

  • I've done two 300k+ rides on them and they didn't feel slow in the slightest.

Do you not think this might have something to do with the fact you were riding the bike?!

  • Hahaha, no as in they aren't a slow tyre. They are pretty supple and get up to speed pretty quick.

  • Should I get the GP4000s II or the Paves?

    Whichever cheapest.

  • Nothing is better than a Pave.

    You did ask, 226g of plushiness;

Main reason I didn't suggest them is because they're not as easily obtainable compared to Conti/Vittoria.

Plus I can't get them on trade so it's #openpave4lyfe and a bit of GP4000s II.

  • Loving the tan sidewalls

  • They are pretty supple and get up to speed pretty quick.

Wiggle reviewer applying for Future Publishing job? #bikeradar

    :-P

  • True though!

But yeah, still need to drop the cash on compass. On trade Pavé just so good though

  • Bontrager Hard Case 25 mm - two years hard riding = no punctures. I have broken a valve in one of the tubes, but still, no punctures. They also come in 23,28,32 and 35mm versions.

You have to run them quite high pressure, oh and you can't run then flat (unlikely) or the puncture resistant Kevlar gets fucked up.

Last time I bought them I paid £64 for four. Probably the best do it all tyres I've ever used. Not super light, and surprisingly responsive for a puncture resistant tyre.

My pal used to do the 'riding over a broken glass bottle and back' on these tyres, pretty impressive first time you see it.

  • Has anyone had an experience with sammy slick 35mm tyre for commuting?

  • Would 25 or 27 width Open Pave CG tyres be a better match for Zonda wheels and a CAAD10 frame?

  • On narrow rims, go 25mm.

  • Used sammy slick tubulars for commuting for 2 years (3 pairs/6 tyres). Several punctures successfuly mended with continental revo sealant. Rear good for about 1500 km, had 3 replaced by schwalbe because of bulges forming before tread was done though. I thought ride was OK, but this year I'm on tufo flexus dry plus and it's no comparison. Tufos much suppler and totally round unlike sammy slicks.

  • Ok. Are the Zondas narrow? I've only really used Open Pros before.

  • Pretty much the same as Open Pros I think, i.e. a little wider than traditional but not a 23mm wide rim.

  • I've some 24mm ones (older version) for sale in the classifieds if you're interested?

  • Would rather buy tyres new, but thanks for the offer.

  • Yeah 25. I had 27c on skinny rims and I was puncturing all over the fucking shop. 25c on and had no issues.

  • Training tyre - Vittoria Open Pave

    You are Gordon Gecko AICMFP

  • Unless you're looking for performance whilst bikepacking - 460g is still lardy. They'd want to be a LOT better than the normal Marathons for me to use these over Durano or Durano Plus.

  • I tried training on cheap tyres, I was slow, they felt shit and I didn't train.
