  • Once I've started window shopping for a chinarello frame so that I can catch up with the current lufguss enthusiasm for disc brakes and wide tyres, is there any reason why I wouldn't just go all the way and get a CX frame? This frame for example has the sort of square geo I am after, and looks nice and understated aesthetically.

I'm not planning to go for full on CX riding, it'll be mostly country lanes like I do currently, but there is of course the occasional non-tarmac bit that makes me re-consider my current 25mm tyres.

  • is there any reason why I wouldn't just go all the way and get a CX frame?

Geometry difference; higher BB, more stability, and the slightly slower steering feel compared to normal road bike.

Having said that, it still be fun to ride, and carbon CX bicycle especially are the OG of gravel grinding (bridleway bashing rather).

  • Cheers. I thought higher BB made for a less stable feel?

Ah, bridleway, that's the word I was looking for.
So Scoble, what tyres would you have recommended for this road? I managed OK on my 25mm Vittoria Pro Tec in terms of speed, but had to concentrate a lot not to go face over handlebars.

  • @starfish&coffee get yourself some 28mm Panaracer gravel kings. Top tyres for exactly that surface. Go bigger if you get a frame with clearance.

  • Cheers. I thought higher BB made for a less stable feel?

Only if you stop moving and didn't unclip.

As for tyres, go for the biggest, minimum 28mm, for budget, the forum's favourite Schwalbe Marathon Supreme in 32mm or 35mm.

For best result, the Challenge Strada Bianca is a perfect all round tyres, smooth and fast on the road, but wide enough to handle bridleway without it feeling skittish on the looser gravel.

  • Have Mavic stopped making CXP33 rims in silver?
Anyone got names of some equivalent?
    Thanks.

  • Have Mavic stopped making CXP33 rims in silver?

I don't even remember seeing them in silvers.

CXP33 are old hats, best to go for something shiny like Archetype.

  • I must be well behind the times.
Archetype looks like it's the sort I was looking for, #rep.

  • I know it shouldn't be done; the risks are fairly obvious. Hence me asking if there was a safe way of doing it.

  • Not sure which elements are important, but when I was looking for rims I ended up with Velocity A23 which may or not suit your needs:-

  • No, I have a old Sovos hub that uses a non standard lockring that are impossible to get hold of now (didn't realise when I bought the wheel).
No skidding and no brakless although I do like to back pedal for scrubbing of speed. I was exploring all options before admitting (to myself) that I'll have to get new wheel. :)

  • Have you asked Tstr if he could do one of his lockrings in the required threading?

  • Yes he did suggest that although that would involve sending him the hub to check the thread is ok and cost about £50 or so and the wheel was only about £20 when I bought it.

  • SPNK sell a fixed conversion kit with two-part epoxy, which they rate as strong enough for mad skidz.

I'm sure if you explained the fix ["Have you tried the veal?"] you're in, they'd tell you what they use and may even sell you some.

  • I have a lot of PDF files (150 or so) that I need to search for a key word and return which files have that word (the PDF files are searchable).

I could probably do something lengthy involving saving as text using Autoit and then something in VBA but that sounds like a very clumsy way of doing it.

Any solutions better than just manually searching through them all? Cheers

EDIT: It turns out you can do this in the current version of Adobe Reader

  • Frames for actual cross racing can have pretty stiff rear triangles, fat seattubes and horizontal toptubes. Fast but not necessarily as comfortable as a road bike over broken roads (ironically).

  • The plate sits in-board of the drive side race. This takes the chain-line out by the width of the bracket. As long as this is not an issue and you can still get the lock-ring on the non-drive side and the left crank isn't fowling the frame all should be well. I hope I explained that correctly.
edit: It would help if I had replied correctly.

  • Cheers ,I'll have a look at that.

    I always try the veal.

  • There are several OG riders who rode brakeless and lockring less...
combination of rotafixing and slowing rather than hop skidding and you'll be fine (not tester approved, nor any implied warranty)

  • How about boat? Apparently there's a summer service from Westminster to Richmond...

Probably slower, but would be awesome to commute by boat!

  • rotafixing

That tells you everything you need to know about the validity of this contribution

  • Going from Borough to Finsbury park, is it easier to change at Kings Cross or Euston?

  • I think the NL and VL platforms are side-by-side at Euston, for that reason. But you will be going one more stop, so who knows whether it actually helps.

  • That's the thing, I'll be in a rush so any time saving will be helpful.

  • Well, if you follow the right signs then you can do the change at KGX quite quickly, you just have to make sure you don't end up going towards the North Ticket Hall. You need to follow signs for the Euston Rd exit to get the quick interchange.

    There's more information here
