I fancy doing a bit of SSCX with my pomp v4 - got some weinmann dp18s at the moment for commuting duty. Can I stick some 31mm knobblies on them or should I be looking at some new rims as well?

DP18s are very narrow. You could, but it won't be ideal. Probably fine for summer with higher pressures but you'd have no chance in mud.

They're fine. Three years ago no one were riding wide rims and open pro was a favorite rim for cyclocross.
