No, the visible air sole isn't necessary. In fact, if one were to skate in these they'd get trashed. They suck for cycling too.
They're definitely comfortable (maybe a hybrid of the air max and Nike free flyknit + SB insole) which was the primary requirement, but I'm over the whole lifestyle/SB shoe.
No need to bin them, they'll probably only last another 6 weeks anyway.
