What about a tnrc style event to bray, not so much wild swimming and you do have to pay but very safe. Open on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.
The free option round here is the jubilee river, it's impassible to boats so again very safe, if you came out via eggham, Windsor great park, Eton, Rodney and swim by the pineapple pub there's the option of a decent sandwich afterwards...
