  • The new chainring is noisy as fuck. Why would it sound so bad when crossed-chained?
It's smaller (removed one chain link) and it's the old chain but it sounds crazy noisy and looks about ready to jump off.

  • What make and model are the old and new rings?

  • They're the same. Both Fibre Lyte single ring. Only difference is teeth count.

  • I've entered the F1B/25 (get me and my TT speak), A1 near Huntingdon on 16/08. Does anyone here have any experience of riding this one fixed? There's a hill near the end so I'm told.

  • This is the old setup with the 55T

  • Silly question, the chain is on the right way, is it? Some are biased for best gearchange performance - but work like a bag of spanners when not fitted per the strucshins. Only other thing I can think of is if the chain has had a lot of miles on the old ring, it won't be as well matched to the new ring, but you know that anyway.

I'm bailing out of the 24h - my mum has just been carted into hospital and needs support, so I'll wish you all the best now Hippy, go and smash it!

  • The chain direction didn't change (I didn't remove it from the bike), so I presume it's on the right way.

It's almost like the chainline changed, except it hasn't because the ring sits flush on the crank and there's no other way to mount it. It's in the same orientation as the old ring too.

I may do a last minute change back to the double setup or try a new chain not sure yet.

Sorry to hear about your Mum. Hope all goes well.

  • This is what happens when I work on bikes...

Fuckin' bikes >>> In the Sea!

  • Does that front mech hanger unscrew? Maybe throw that in the sea.

  • Nope. Cervelo are the only ones I've seen so far with removable hangers.

  • Looks as if the pitch of the teeth isn't quite right, they look like they're having to push into the gaps. Could it be made a bit wrong?

  • Have you sent that link to Stephen at Fibrelyte? Possibly they have made a 3/32" track ring for you, if you asked for 3/32" single without specifying that you were using 1×9/10/11. The teeth would be 2.4mm wide for 3/32" but 2.2mm for 9/10/11-speed. Everything I've ever had from them has been spot-on dimensionally, but somebody may have erroneously sent the wrong G-Code to the CNC, either due to confusion about exactly what you were asking for or just dumb error.

  • Yeah, I've sent it to him but no reply yet.
Hmm, that might explain things but it's a bit too late to change now. Bugger.

  • So you've gone from 22 gears to 9, with a chain that's likely to fall off.

    Time to go fixed!

  • Yeah, the pursuit for aero benefits is fraught with danger stupidity.

  • I do like the idea of Holton's singlespeed. Aero, simple, no derailing of chains - intentional or otherwise.

I can't go fixed because in the long stuff I need to coast to do 'stuff'.

  • "just watched the video, it's definitely something to do with the interface between the chainring and chain. No idea why but the chain seems to be 'popping' onto every tooth. My first reaction is the chain is too narrow for the teeth but the chain is sitting on the teeth once it's 'popped' and located so I can't imagine it's that. Next thought is are the tips of the teeth chamfered to allow the chain to slip on, but I'm sure they are. What chain is it and just out of curiosity, is the chainring sitting completely flat on the feet or the crank spider i.e. it's not tight on the crank and sitting at a very slight angle or even being forced to bend? The best way to work that out is to untighten all the chainring bolts and see if the chainring moves at all. I'm clutching at straws a bit as it's not something I've seen before but it does look a bit like the chainring might not be running true."

He suggested not using it. Le whoops. #fuckit

  • Any thoughts on position from the #internetbikefit tester experts?

  • My first thought was:

  • Decent. Treat yourself to a skinsuit and aero helmet.

  • Should I grow a flavour-saver?

  • Fucking wind. 20:40. Most riders about a minute down, but that means nothing.
