Have you tried using the Strava route planner? It's based around the popularity of user uploads so it will usually provide a decent ride (particularly as it shouldn't send you straight to Richmond or Regent's Park going in this direction!).
It's not bullet-proof but I've ridden to Nottingham a few times and Strava's suggested route would have been better than any of the ones I used, or tried to create myself (the functionality didn't exist then). Plus it's dead simple to use..

I'm going to be cycling back to my parents place in a month's time, looking for a bit of route advice as I'm not familiar with north of London much. I want to go via Milton Keynes direction as it seems to make the most sense rather than Banbury/Leamington.
Will be on a geared road bike, looking to avoid main roads, will have a garmin so directions should not be an issue.
Once I'm into the lanes north of Milton Keynes I'm fine, Just need a bit of advice on getting out of london around watford etc. This is preliminary route:
