  • I have some 28c paselas on a set of tb14s which should be comparable. I'll have to grab my calipers from work tomorrow though so if you're in a hurry its not much use.

  • One size wider rather than larger, as it get a tiny bit less height than on narrow rims.

@owl probably best to go for 25mm GP4000s, best thing about wide rims is that the 25mm feel like 28mm.

  • Why GP4000s over Stradas? Twice the price is punchy, do you not think the Stradas are up to it re puncture protection?

  • One size wider rather than larger...

Quite right, I could have been clearer.

  • I'd get the Open Pave. I love them. I'll never ride anything else.

    Grip in the wet.
    Fast in the dry.
    Puncture protection better than anything.
Feel so plush to ride. Even with butyl tubes.
Last long enough. I've done 8000 miles on a front tyre and it's still got life.

25c open pave come up at near 27. And 27 at about 28.

  • Strada is a nice tyres, it felt like a faster version of the Panaracer, but that's about it.

Good new is that the Strada come up less than advertised, meaning that after inflation at 120psi overnight, deflate back to 80psi and it end up being exactly as measured.

I used to have Strada on 17mm internal rims, it measured up exactly 28mm after a couple weeks (was 25mm when first mounted).

I recommend GP4000s or Open Pave if you want a much bigger difference compared to riding on Panaracer in the past.

  • For what its worth I noticed a pretty big difference moving directly from 28c paselas to the clement stradas. If a decent deal for gp4000s or Paves came up though I'd probably try those on the *nice * bike.

  • This is all really helpful, thank you. Pave's currently available at wiggle for £31 so not much more than the strada. I guess the question is how much I want that retro gumwall stylez vs a higher performing and more puncture resistant(?) tyre. Hmmmmmm

  • They are about the same at ribble at the minute but MID10 is 10% off. Making them 56.70 a pair.

  • Great shout. Just seen these Challenge Open Stradas on Ribble, anyone got any experience of these? Are they basically the same as the Clement Strada?

  • @owl if you're looking at 25's you could try the Vittoria open corsa, if gumwall is preferred. I've been, ahem, commuting on them for 2 months and have even done a few gravel excursions on them and they've been fine, which is crazy for a race tyre. BUT I would say the Open Pave is somehow comfier and rides really well. I imagine a 27mm on an archetype would be amazing.
FWIW a 25mm vittoria seems to be bang on 25 on a 23mm rim (19 internal)

  • All this tyre talk has me ready to buy now. Should I get the GP4000s II or the Paves? They are both about the same price and I'll be getting some the black paves and the 28mm GPs so looks and size should be similar.

Is one better than the other or are they all much the same?

  • conti GP's will most likely last longer.

Vittorias will be plusher, as fast, gripper and look 12,000 times cooler.

  • Thanks for this - I've listened to advice and gone for the Open Pave. 1100+ miles in 10 days unsupported probably isn't the time to be prioritising aesthetics over function! Will def be looking for some gumwalls for future posing so will bear these in mind.

  • I hope you don't have H+Son TB14's.

Seriously, don't get Open Paves if you have these rims. I had to pay my LBS to get them off, still don't get how they managed it. I tried everything suggested on here and more.

Running 28mm Gravel Kings as a replacement and they are amazing so far.

  • I had no issues with that combination.

  • PAVÉ FO LYF

Fox, your technique is wrong bruh. I have no problem at all mounting them to (and taking them off) SL23's which are notoriously shit for mounting a tyre to.

  • Got archetypes. Same width so presumably same problem, or am I missing something? I don't want to be fighting my tyre by the roadside in the arse-end of nowhere if I can possibly avoid it.

  • I hope you don't have H+Son TB14's.

I had no issues with that combination.

I had my finger over the button and now...

  • Nah it wasn't. Bike shop report no user error and multiple problems with Open Paves.

Agreed they were stupidly, stupidly tight. The Gravel Kings are tight on them too, but not so tight you can't get anything under them, which is how tight the Paves were.

If I just posed around town I would have kept them on probably but who wants to be unable to remove a tyre 30 miles from anywhere.

  • The 'feature' may well not exist with Archetypes. I had them on Ardennes before for a bit which are pretty similar and they were fine.

  • I have Archetypes and been running Paves (25's and 27's) with no issues mounting, or removing them. Excellent tyres. Would recommend buying them whenever they come up cheap.

  • I was very happy with Paves until I put them on the TB14's.

I've got to say that having ridden both, Gravel Kings are better.

  • All these tyres with soft sidewalls will have tight beads to keep the tyres on. All these rims for tubeless are designed for a tight fit too.

  • Hahaha. Nothing is better than a Pave :-P... if you can mount and unmount it anyway.

I've been without a road bike for a while though and have been using 32c Pasela's on my Cross Check and they're actually really decent as no nonsense commuting tyres that look nice. I've done two 300k+ rides on them and they didn't feel slow in the slightest.
