Which Tyres?

  • Depends innit...

Seriously though, tyres don't have weight limits as such.

89kg is chubbing-up nicely, but hardly 'merican.

23mm are fast becoming outdated on the road.

    tl/dr
You'll be fine, but fatter tyres are better on the road and thinner tyres are better if you're time trialling.

  • '23mm outdated',
read, on here, agreed & understood,
but these tyres are a legacy of the unknowing mrs mespilus buying mespilus jr a bike she knew nothing about.

    'time trialling', ha ha ha,
not this year. Seldom hit 20 mph for a measured half mile, within a longer ride.
TT'ing will have to wait until the next stone, at least is shed.

  • I weigh around 85kg, ride 23mm Schwalbe One's, before that R.1's, and some times carry silly things on my back like bike frames, 60 empty glass bottles or a big tv and have never had a problem with the tyres.

  • Thanks for that,
I will pop them on the 'Sunday' bike to see how they handle
and compare to whats on there at the moment.

  • They're great tyres, even better if paired with 17 or 19mm internal rims.

  • I rate the Endurance version a lot, tough, hard wearing tyres with good grip in most conditions. The only drawback is that they don't like a mix of damp and dry conditions, quite often I find the grip goes on a damp patch.

  • brand new schwalbe one tubs, pucnture after some 100k into velothon wales. Not happy. Giving them one more go.

  • Just added another one to your formidable collection of various tyre brands you punctured? Should be happy!

  • I've ridden Schwalbe's new Durano DD since December with not a single issue and I've not had a problem with Pana RiBMo's but they're really bouncy. Durano DD is my fav tyre for training, Vittoria Corsa CX for racing.

  • Got my first puncture in 10,000miles today.
    A thorn.
To be fair the rear tyre has done about 4000miles and is looking worn. Can't be much tread left on it as thorn was small but went right through.

  • I was disappointed with One's - they cut up really quickly and were very puncture prone. I know they're not meant to be commuter tyres, but lasted far less than the Ultremos they replaced. Nice ride though.

Moved onto sweet gumwall Open Corsa SC's now.

  • If you were riding in Camberwell Road last night, everyone got lots of cuts.

  • Pro4 are lovely tyres indeed and a bargain!

  • Gotta love that new tyre feeling...

  • Absolutely loving my compass stampede pass on the Mercian....they feel a lot quicker, and certainly more plush than the world tours that were on there....I'm nearly at the end of my usual 40odd mile jaunt to see my mum, and I'll upload to strava to see how they measure up! :0)

  • I know this has been gone over loads in this thread but I'm having trouble making a decision on what tyre to acquire... Usually use Maxxi Re-fuse, always been happy with. I favour puncture-resistance and good grippiness. Don't care too much about racing but at the same time don't want super harsh/heavy. Aiming for 28mm, and it'll go on the Sunday bike.

PBK has a bunch on sale at the moment, so choosing between:
Vittoria Open Pave CG (maybe not very puncture resistant?)
    Continental Grand Prix 4000S II
Continental Grand Prix 4Season (maybe not very grippy?)
    Schwalbe Durano RaceGuard Performance (cheapest)

  • 4000sII if for Sunday best!

  • Paves or GP4000SII.

  • I have done about 2000 miles on some 27mm paves and only had one puncture which was due to a shard of glass. Best tyres I have had.

  • Go for whichever is cheaper (open pave or gp4000s).

Bigger size mean less chance of puncture especially with a lower pressure, I ran a tyres with no kind of puncture resistant layer and massive at 42mm, get about 3-5 punctures a years (that including commuting).

  • Just wondering if anyone can help with some tyre-sizing advice - currently running Pasela 28's on my 2013 Genesis Equilibrium on a 19mm rim and they just about fit under the guards I've got on there. Am doing LEJOG in a few weeks, have some archetypes to build up and looking for tyres. Will Clement Strada 28s on the wider rim come up any bigger than the paselas? Is there enough of an advantage to the 28s on wide rims over the 25s to justify the slight risk of them not fitting under the guards? Cheers

  • I have some 28c clement stradas on a mavic xm319 which I think is a 19mm internal width rim. I can measure them up if it helps.

I'm looking for a similar tyre but in a 32c if anyone has any recommendations.

  • That is a very kind offer, but I don't have any calipers or accurate measuring device myself so it may not answer definitively. Has anyone owned both? Got a feeling @edscoble may have so any advice much appreciated. Edging towards buying the 25s to be on the safe side, unless anyone knows for sure they'll come up no bigger than the paselas...

  • My experience with Archetypes, is that tyres come up one size larger, ie 23mm tyre measures 25mm.

So if 28mm on a narrow rim is tight, then I can't see 28mm on a wide rim fitting.

However, 25mm/wide will ride at least as well as 28mm/narrow.
